Mégantic, un train dans la nuit: Traduzione e analisi del graphic novel

Abstract

In occasione del decimo anniversario dal disastro ferroviario di Lac-Mégantic del 6 luglio 2013, il presente elaborato si configura come analisi e proposta di traduzione inedita in italiano del graphic novel Mégantic, un train dans la nuit, realizzato da Anne-Marie Saint-Cerny e Christian Quesnel e pubblicato da Écosocité nel 2021. Un graphic novel di notevole interesse, che tocca tematiche politiche, sociali ed ecologiche estremamente attuali. Nell’elaborato, si definiscono dapprima fumetto e graphic novel, per poi concentrarsi sulla descrizione del presente graphic novel, analizzandone struttura, storia e aspetti grafici. Si approfondisce, in seguito, la traduzione del fumetto, anche alla luce delle peculiarità di tale medium che rendono il processo traduttivo ancora più stimolante, fornendo un breve excursus storico sugli studi traduttologici che si sono interessati alla traduzione di tale medium. A seguire, la proposta di traduzione del graphic novel Mégantic, un train dans la nuit, inserita direttamente all’interno dei balloon e delle didascalie con l’ausilio del programma Paint 3D, in modo tale da permettere di constatare tale rapporto di complementarità e interdipendenza tra immagini e testo. Il presente elaborato si conclude col commento alla traduzione, in cui si delinea dapprima l’approccio alla traduzione e la metodologia traduttiva, con particolare attenzione al modello e alle tecniche traduttive adottate, con riferimento agli studi di Podeur e di Salmon. Si analizzano alcuni elementi caratteristici del medium, quali pertestualità, onomatopee e interiezioni. Mégantic, un train dans la nuit, inoltre, presenta québécismes e “sacres”, ovvero elementi tipici della comunità linguistica e culturale del Québec. È stato quindi opportuno soffermarsi sulla rappresentazione del français québécois nel presente graphic novel, nonché sull’uso di anglicismi anche alla luce dell’evoluzione storica di tale lingua.

On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of Lac-Mégantic rail disaster on 6 July 2013, this paper offers an analysis and a translation proposal into Italian of the graphic novel Mégantic, un train dans la nuit, created by Anne-Marie Saint-Cerny and Christian Quesnel and published by Écosocité in 2021. This graphic novel of considerable interest touches on extremely current political, social and ecological issues. The paper first offers a definition of comics and graphic novel, then focuses on the description of Mégantic, un train dans la nuit, analysing its structure, history and graphic aspects. The translation of comics is then examined in depth, also considering the peculiarities of this medium that make the translation process even more challenging and providing a brief historical excursus on the Translation studies that have been interested in the translation of this medium. This is followed by the translation proposal of the graphic novel Mégantic, un train dans la nuit, inserted directly within the balloons and captions with the aid of Paint 3D, in order to emphasise the relationship of complementarity and interdependence between images and text. This paper concludes with a commentary on the translation, in which the translation approach and methodology are first outlined, with particular attention to the translation model and techniques adopted, with reference to the studies of Podeur and Salmon. Some key features of the medium are analysed, such as pertextuality, onomatopoeia and interjections. Mégantic, un train dans la nuit also presents québécismes and 'sacres', i.e. distinctive characteristics of Quebec linguistic and cultural community. It was therefore appropriate to focus on the representation of Québécois French in this graphic novel, as well as on the use of anglicisms also in light of the historical evolution of this language.
