"The fool doth think he is wise, but the wiseman knows himself to be a fool". Il ruolo del Fool nel teatro di Shakespeare.

Abstract

L'obiettivo di questo elaborato è l'analisi del ruolo del fool all'interno del teatro di Shakespeare. Si parte con una breve introduzione sul periodo in esame, quello elisabettiano, e sulla vita di William Shakespeare, volta a fornire un quadro storico-sociale utile per l’approfondimento di questo personaggio. Viene poi esaminato in maniera specifica il ruolo del fool: sia da un punto di vista storico, analizzando le tradizioni da cui deriva e la percezione che si aveva della follia durante l'Early Modern Age; sia da un punto di vista drammaturgico, considerando le caratteristiche distintive di questo personaggio, il costume, il linguaggio usato e il ruolo riservato ad esso all'interno dei drammi. Il fulcro di questo elaborato consiste nell'analisi di questo ruolo nel teatro di Shakespeare, il cui obiettivo è mettere in luce le peculiarità dei personaggi messi in scena, in relazione alle caratteristiche attribuite al tipo fool.

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the role of the fool in Shakespeare’s theatre. It starts with a brief introduction on the examined period, the Elisabethan one, and on William Shakespeare’s life, that is aimed at providing the historical and social context in order to better understand this type of character. The role of the fool is then specifically explored: both from an historical point of view, analysing the traditions from which it derives and the perception of madness during the Early Modern Age; and from a dramaturgical point of view, considering the distinctive characteristics of this character, the costume, the language used and the role reserved to it in the dramas. The core of this thesis consists in the analyses of this role in Shakespeare’s theatre, in order to highlight the specificities of the staged characters, referring to the characteristics attributed to the role of the fool.
