Abstract

ARTISTA X ARTISTA è una residenza nata a Cuba nel 2015 proponendosi come una piattaforma per colmare la mancanza di sostegno dalle istituzioni e sollecitando una collaborazione non gerarchica tra artisti di diverse generazioni. L’obiettivo dichiarato dal suo fondatore, l’artista Carlos Garaicoa, era quello di fondare un'istituzione privata, capace di generare relazioni orizzontali, offrendo opportunità e condizioni per accogliere artisti internazionali e favorire la partenza di artisti cubani. Il presente studio propone di esaminare se e come l’obiettivo centrale di ARTISTA X ARTISTA sia stato raggiunto, concentrandosi sull’analisi degli approcci con cui Carlos Garaicoa ha sviluppato una serie di relazioni all’interno del contesto artistico cubano. Analizzando dapprima il contesto storico e artistico dove Garaicoa nasce, si forma e fonda la sua residenza artistica. Per questo necessaria è stata anche l’analisi di alcune opere dell’artista utili per comprendere come la sua attività di Art Director non si possa considerare staccata da quella di artista, da sempre caratterizzata da uno sguardo critico verso L’Avana. La ricostruzione dell’attività della residenza è sostenuta dalla catalogazione di tutti gli artisti che sono passati o che sono partiti da Cuba. Inoltre, attraverso delle interviste raccolte proprio per questo progetto, le parole degli artisti forniscono un’ulteriore prova del raggiungimento degli obiettivi fondanti di ARTISTA X ARTISTA.

ARTISTA X ARTISTA is a residency established in Cuba in 2015, presenting itself as a platform to address the lack of support from institutions and promoting non-hierarchical collaboration among artists of different generations. The stated goal of its founder, artist Carlos Garaicoa, was to establish a private institution capable of fostering horizontal relationships, providing opportunities and conditions to welcome international artists, and facilitating the development of Cuban artists. This study aims to examine whether and how ARTISTA X ARTISTA has achieved its central objective, focusing on the analysis of the approaches through which Carlos Garaicoa has cultivated relationships within the Cuban artistic context.Beginning with an analysis of the historical and artistic context in which Garaicoa was born, educated, and founded his artistic residency. This paper also involves the examination of some of the artist's works to understand how his role as Art Director cannot be considered separate from that of artist, consistently characterized by a critical perspective toward Havana. The reconstruction of the residency's activities is supported by cataloguing all the artists who have passed through or departed from Cuba. Additionally, through interviews conducted specifically for this project, the words of the artists provide further evidence of the achievement of the foundational objectives of ARTISTA X ARTISTA.
