Rappresentare l'Inghilterra della Reggenza: Il Regency Novel da Jane Austen a Georgette Heyer e Julia Quinn.

Abstract

Il Regency romance novel è un genere che ha affascinato lettori di ogni epoca e, grazie alla sua capacità di adattarsi alle convenzioni moderne pur conservando le caratteristiche tradizionali, questo genere continua a trovare il proprio spazio nel panorama letterario moderno e a essere amato dal pubblico contemporaneo. Alla luce di tali premesse, il presente elaborato si propone di esaminare l’evoluzione di questo genere attraverso l’analisi critica di opere di tre autrici influenti: Jane Austen, Georgette Heyer e Julia Quinn. La ricerca si apre con una breve panoramica storico-culturale sul periodo Regency, soffermandosi anche sulle principali figure e influenze letteraria. Per l’analisi delle tre opere che sono oggetto precipuo di questo lavoro ci si è serviti principalmente del volume A Natural History of the Romance Novel di Pamela Regis (2003). L’analisi di Pride and Prejudice (1813) di Austen rivela il rapporto assai complesso, per certi versi ambiguo, dell’autrice con il periodo Regency e come la sua maestria nel dipingere e analizzare la società dell'epoca abbia contribuito alla notorietà dell’autrice stessa. Il lavoro prosegue con un capitolo dedicato a Georgette Heyer ed evidenzia la profonda influenza che Austen ebbe su di lei e l’approccio meticoloso di Heyer alla ricerca storica. Prendendo come caso di studio il romanzo Regency Buck (1935), si analizza lo stile descrittivo di Heyer e come questa autrice abbia reinterpretato il genere Regency nella prima metà del XX secolo. Infine, l’attenzione si sposta su Julia Quinn, autrice contemporanea, e sul romanzo The Duke and I (2000). Si esaminano i punti in comune e le differenze tra le tre autrici, analizzando temi centrali, strutture narrative e adattamenti dettati dalle aspettative e dai paradigmi della cultura moderna. In conclusione, si dimostra come Quinn abbia reinterpretato il genere per soddisfare i lettori contemporanei, mantenendo un equilibrio tra tradizione e innovazione.

The Regency romance novel genre has captivated readers for more than three centuries. Thanks to its ability to adapt to modern conventions while preserving its traditional characteristics, this genre continues to carve out its place in the modern literary landscapes and remains beloved by contemporary audiences. In light of these premises, the present study aims to examine the evolution of this genre through the critical analysis of works by three influential authors: Jane Austen, Georgette Heyer, and Julia Quinn. The research starts from a brief historical and cultural overview of Regency period, also dwelling on key literary figures and influences. For the analysis of the three novels that are the main focus of this work, I have mainly relied on Pamela Regis’s A Natural History of the Romance Novel (2003) as a critical tool. The analysis of Austen’ Pride and Prejudice (1813), reveals the very complex, at times ambiguous, relationship she had with the Regency period and how her mastery in portraying and analyzing the society of her time contributed to her renown. The following chapter is devoted to Georgette Heyer and highlights both the deep influence Austen had on her work and Heyer’s meticulous approach to historical research. Taking the the novel Regency Buck (1935) as a case study, Heyer’s descriptive style is also examined, along with how she reinterpreted the Regency genre in the twentieth century. Finally, we move to Julia Quinn, a contemporary author, and to her novel The Duke and I (2000). Similarities and differences between the three authors are explored, analyzing central themes, narrative structures, and changes made in agreement with new cultural perceptions and trends. The final part of this chapter argues that how Quinn reinterpreted the Regency romance novel genre to meet the expectations of contemporary readers, striking a balance between tradition and innovation.
