Da Remarque a Milestone: un'analisi del manifesto pacifista del Novecento

Abstract

Partendo dalle tensioni tra Russia e Ucraina, culminate nella guerra nel 2022 ed evidenziando come questo conflitto sia una realtà palpabile in Europa, si sottolinea che, nonostante le tecnologie moderne, questa guerra ci riporta ad un passato simile a quello descritto nel romanzo "Niente di nuovo sul fronte occidentale" di E.M. Remarque. L'analisi si concentra sulla riflessione sul pacifismo e l'antimilitarismo, partendo dai concetti di pace, pacifismo e antimilitarismo e dal pensiero filosofico che li ha influenzati nel corso della storia. Il lavoro esamina come le opere di Remarque e Milestone, in particolare "Niente di nuovo sul fronte occidentale," abbiano aperto la strada a un filone artistico che denuncia la crudeltà della guerra. Vengono pertanto esaminate le caratteristiche delle opere dei due autori esplorando analogie e differenze. Si evidenzia come il romanzo rappresenti una forma di Bildungsroman inverso, poiché anziché portare i giovani protagonisti alla maturità, li condanna alla distruzione. Infine, si esaminano la comunicazione della pace, analizzando gli strumenti moderni e il giornalismo orientato alla pace. Si sottolinea come l'era digitale permetta un Citizen Journalism, consentendo a tutti di partecipare alla divulgazione delle notizie da prospettive diverse. L'elaborato conclude con una riflessione sulla rilevanza del tema della pace oggi, in un momento in cui l'Europa è testimone di una guerra in Ucraina che sembra richiamare gli scenari della Prima Guerra Mondiale. L'obiettivo principale del lavoro è stimolare una riflessione sul pacifismo, considerando due opere fondamentali del XIX secolo alla luce del contesto attuale.

Starting from the tensions between Russia and Ukraine, which culminated in the war in 2022 and highlighting how this conflict is a palpable reality in Europe, it is underlined that, despite modern technologies, this war takes us back to a past like the one described in the novel "Nothing Different new on the Western Front" by E.M. Remarque. The analysis focuses on the reflection on pacifism and antimilitarism, starting from the concepts of peace, pacifism, and antimilitarism and from the philosophical thought that has influenced them throughout history. The work examines how the works of Remarque and Milestone, in particular "All Quiet on the Western Front," paved the way for an artistic trend that denounces the cruelty of war. The characteristics of the works of the two authors are therefore examined, exploring similarities and differences. It is highlighted that the novel represents a form of reverse Bildungsroman, since instead of bringing the young protagonists to maturity, it condemns them to destruction. Finally, peace communication is examined, analysing modern tools and peace-oriented journalism. It is underlined how the digital age allows Citizen Journalism, allowing everyone to participate in the dissemination of news from different perspectives. The essay concludes with a reflection on the relevance of the theme of peace today, at a time when Europe is witnessing a war in Ukraine that seems to recall the scenarios of the First World War.
