Abstract

L'interesse accademico verso i cluster marittimi è in crescita costante, grazie al loro rilevante impatto sulla crescita economica regionale e sulla gestione strategica delle risorse globali nel settore della navigazione. Questa tesi propone una meticolosa revisione della letteratura relativa ai cluster marittimi con l'obiettivo di delineare un quadro concettuale unificato per la categorizzazione delle tematiche di ricerca fondamentali, individuare settori emergenti di studio e identificare le sfide future. La ricerca approfondisce le metodologie di analisi dei cluster marittimi, integrandole con specifici casi di studio. Inoltre, riconoscendo il ruolo determinante dell'industria marittima internazionale nella sostenibilità globale, la tesi valuta il potenziale contributo che i cluster marittimi ricoprono nella promozione dello sviluppo sostenibile, identificando i fattori critici di questa trasformazione. Infine, il caso studio incentrato sul cluster marittimo di Shanghai analizza il suo sviluppo storico, i vantaggi competitivi e le attuali sfide, con particolare attenzione alle politiche finalizzate al suo potenziamento e allo sviluppo sostenibile. I risultati mettono in luce l'importanza cruciale per i cluster marittimi basati sui porti, come quello di Shanghai, di una transizione verso porti ecologicamente sostenibili, hub globali delle catene di approvvigionamento e centri di gestione delle risorse marittime. Questa trasformazione richiede un approccio integrato basato su innovazioni, politiche governative mirate, efficienza organizzativa, infrastrutture adeguate e iniziative promozionali, tutti essenziali per promuovere una crescita sostenibile.

In the past few years, there has been a growing academic interest in maritime clusters, driven by their significant impact on both regional economic growth and the strategic allocation of global shipping assets. This study offers a comprehensive re-examination of maritime cluster research by conducting an exhaustive review of relevant literature. Its primary objectives encompass the establishment of a coherent framework for categorizing pivotal research themes, the identification of emerging and consequential areas of study, and the elucidation of challenges that await future exploration within the domain of maritime clusters. The thesis then delves into a thorough examination of the principal research methodologies employed in the analysis of maritime clusters, supplemented by an analysis of specific case studies of individual clusters. Recognizing the significant role of the international maritime industry in global sustainability, the study then proposes an assessment of clusters' potential in promoting sustainable development (SD). It seeks to answer two crucial questions: what contributions can maritime clusters make to sustainable development, and what are the critical determinants of this transformational pathway? In conclusion, the Shanghai maritime cluster is selected as a case study, encompassing an exploration of its historical development, competitive advantages, extant challenges, and critical issues. Furthermore, policies aimed at its enhancement and sustainable development are meticulously reviewed. The findings underscore the imperative for port-based maritime clusters, exemplified by Shanghai, to evolve into environmentally sustainable ports, global supply-chain hubs, and centres for the allocation of maritime resources. To achieve this transformation, a mix of innovations and a government-led effort with explicit cluster strategies, effective policies, efficient organization, infrastructure, and promotions are crucial for sustainable growth.
