Seth Siegelaub: analisi critica dei suoi progetti artistico-culturali 1964-2013

Abstract

Seth Siegelaub è conosciuto per il suo lavoro di promotore dell’arte concettuale, ma l’interesse per questa corrente coprì un periodo relativamente breve all’inizio della sua carriera quando, trasferitosi in Europa, cambiò attività dedicandosi a ricerche sulla stampa di sinistra. Per il resto della vita portò avanti numerosi altri progetti, prima sulla storia dei tessuti e poi sulla metodologia con cui viene studiata e scritta la storia dell’arte. Entrambi sono stati finora poco analizzati, nascosti dalla sua fama per il coinvolgimento con gli artisti della fine degli anni Sessanta. Siegelaub svolse molte attività diverse ed è difficile trovare un’unica parola per descriverle, è più facile dire cosa non fu, nominando i ruoli con cui egli stesso non voleva essere identificato: curatore, intellettuale, scrittore, editore, collezionista. Il suo lavoro è stato quello di “facilitatore”, creando delle cornici in cui altri potessero lavorare: supportò gli artisti concettuali ad esporre; li aiutò a vendere le opere in modo che fossero rispettati i loro diritti; riunì collezioni di libri sui media e sulla storia dei tessuti per incrementare gli studi in questi settori; in un periodo più tardo realizzò progetti per facilitare le ricerche sull’arte degli anni Sessanta con una nuova ottica politica ed economica. Egli si posizionò quasi sempre super partes, riuscendo a passare da un ambito all’altro lasciando dietro di sé domande aperte che potessero incentivare nuove riflessioni su numerosi argomenti.

Seth Siegelaub is best known for his work as a promoter of conceptual art, but his interest in this current covered a relatively short period early in his career when, having moved to Europe, he changed activities, devoting himself to research on left-hand printmaking. For the rest of his life he pursued numerous other projects, first on the history of textiles and then on the methodology by which art history is studied and written. Both have so far been little analyzed, hidden from his fame by his involvement with artists in the late 1960s. Siegelaub carried out many different activities and it is difficult to find a single word to describe them; it is easier to say what he was not, naming the roles with which he himself did not want to be identified: curator, intellectual, writer, publisher, collector. His work was that of "facilitator," creating frameworks in which others could work: he supported conceptual artists to exhibit; he helped them sell works so that their rights would be respected; he assembled collections of books on media and the history of textiles to increase studies in these areas; and in a later period he carried out projects to facilitate research on the art of the 1960s with a new political and economic perspective. He positioned himself almost always super partes, managing to move from one field to another, leaving behind open questions that could stimulate new thinking on numerous topics.
