L'interesse per l'Oriente nelle opere di Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione detto "Il Grechetto"

Abstract

Il lavoro è incentrato sulle opere del Grechetto (Genova 1609 – Mantova 1664) che esprimono un particolare interesse per alcuni aspetti delle culture del Vicino Oriente. Nell'affrontare l'argomento ho fatto emergere l'interesse per l'Oriente diffuso negli ambienti culturali frequentati, secondo la critica, dal Grechetto, in particolare di area romana, proponendo di identificare una maggiore vicinanza del Castiglione, riguarda a questi temi, all'ambiente romano che non a quello genovese . Per le figure all'orientale, presenti in diversi incisioni e tele, ho proposto una serie di confronti con artisti come Rembrandt ma soprattutto con Stefano della Bella e le immagini di testi come il "De gli Habiti antichi e moderni" di CesareVecellio e i Viaggi di Nicolas de Nicolay. Ho poi affrontato il tema delle lingue, con riferimento al cartiglio in ebraico della Visione Mistica di San Bernardo di Chiaravalle nella Chiesa di Santa Maria della Cella, per poi chiudere con un approfondimento sulla tela del San Giacomo che scaccia i Mori dell'Oratorio di San Giacomo della Marina.

The work focuses on Grechetto's works that express a particular interest in certain aspects of Near Eastern cultures. In approaching the subject, I have highlighted the interest in the Orient that was widespread in the cultural circles frequented, according to the critics, by Grechetto, particularly in the Roman area, proposing to identify a greater closeness of Castiglione, regarding these themes, to the Roman environment than to the Genoese one . For the Oriental figures, present in several engravings and canvases, I proposed a series of comparisons with artists such as Rembrandt but especially with Stefano della Bella and the images of texts such as Cesre Vecellio's 'De gli Habiti antichi e moderni' and Nicolas de Nicolay's 'Viaggi'. I then tackled the theme of tongues, with reference to the cartouche in Hebrew of the Mystical Vision of St Bernard of Clairvaux in the Church of Santa Maria della Cella, and then closed with an in-depth look at the painting of St James driving out the Moors in the Oratory of San Giacomo della Marina.
