AUGUSTA HOLMÈS TRA LETTERATURA E MUSICA

Abstract

Questa tesi su Augusta Holmès, compositrice di origine irlandese nata a Parigi il 16 dicembre 1847 e ivi morta il 28 gennaio 1903, si propone di dimostrare quell’aspetto di originalità assoluta che emerge dall’analisi del rapporto tra Letteratura e Musica all’interno delle sue opere, privilegiando e soffermandomi su quelle a sfondo esotico. Nel perlustrare il mondo di questa incredibile figura è per me obbligo citare due pubblicazioni la cui lettura è stata fondamentale nel pormi delle domande e cercare di portare un contributo alla conoscenza della figura di questa artista. I testi in questione sono Augusta Holmès, l’outrancière di Gérard Gefen e Les Mélodies d’Augusta Holmès di Brigitte Olivier. L’analisi di cui sopra non può naturalmente non tener conto di quanto il passato abbia influito sulle creazioni artistiche della compositrice ma si propone di lanciare anche uno sguardo su quanto quest’ultime abbiano comunicato alle generazioni successive. Se io, donna del XXI secolo, sento e colgo questa originalità, vuol dire che davvero questa artista ha creato qualcosa che va oltre il suo tempo ed è profondamente attuale ed universale come lo è una vera opera d’arte. Dopo un accenno alla biografia di Augusta Holmès, con un occhio sempre rivolto agli eventi storico-coloniali, passo ad esaminare le manifestazioni artistiche, con una particolare attenzione a quelle “esotiche”, nella letteratura, nella musica e nell’arte figurativa che in qualche modo hanno avuto un legame con l’artista e che con il loro intrecciarsi hanno creato le radici ed il contesto culturale-esotico in cui la compositrice ha vissuto. Mi soffermo dunque sulle composizioni artistiche di Augusta che più sono intrise di alcune varianti di questo fenomeno culturale sia nei testi che nella musica. L’originalità di Augusta emerge dalle sue opere proprio dal modo in cui ella ci trasmette il suo vivere queste varianti.

This thesis on Augusta Holmès, composer of Irish origin born in Paris on 16 December 1847 and died there on 28 January 1903, aims to demonstrate that aspect of absolute originality that emerges from the analysis of the relationship between Literature and Music within his works, privileging and dwelling on those exotic background. In exploring the world of this incredible figure, I must mention two publications whose reading was fundamental in asking me questions and trying to make a contribution to the knowledge of the figure of this artist. The texts in question are Augusta Holmès, l'outrancière by Gérard Gefen and Les Mélodies d'Augusta Holmès by Brigitte Olivier. The above analysis cannot, of course, fail to take into account how much the past has influenced the artistic creations of the composer but also aims to launch a look at what the latter have communicated to subsequent generations. If I, a woman of the 21st century, feel and understand this originality, it means that this artist has really created something that goes beyond her time and is deeply current and universal as it is a true work of art. After a mention of the biography of Augusta Holmès, with an eye always turned to the historical-colonial events, I pass to examine the artistic manifestations, with a particular attention to those "exotic"in literature, music and figurative art that somehow had a link with the artist and that with their intertwining created the roots and the cultural-exotic context in which the composer lived. I will therefore dwell on the artistic compositions of Augusta that are most steeped in some variations of this cultural phenomenon both in the texts and in the music. The originality of Augusta emerges from her works precisely from the way in which she transmits to us her living these variants.
