| it_IT |
dc.description.abstract | Anne Carson and Stephane Mallarmé both find themselves, in different eras, faced with the question of emptiness: they think of it and thank it as a moment of incalculable value. Poetry, for Mallarmé, has no price, as it is for Anne Carson; poetry is both an act of grace grace and a waste of words. Anne Carson, in the essay Economy of the Unlost, cites Mallarmè calling him the poet of Nothingness, and his poetry as a blank space in which, in the end, everything disappears. Through silence, whether it is found on the blank page (physical silence), or inside the words themselves (metaphysical silence), Anne Carson reflects on Nothing, as an invisible and omnipresent substance, which creeps between things, between letters, and between two lovers. The poet is the one who looks at the Nothing as something that exists, rather than as something that does not exist, therefore it must be questioned and witnessed. He perceives a lack, where all others see fullness. Mallarmé constantly perceived this lack: he was fascinated by emptiness, so much so that he looked for it on the page, but also within the concepts and words themselves. Through the typographic and thematic analysis of some of Mallarmè's poetic texts, we perceive the suggestions that Anne Carson may have grasped and subsequently applied in works such as: Antigonick, Autobiography of Red, The Beauty of the Husband, Norma Jeane Baker of Troy and The Albertine Workout, up to his most famous essay Eros the bittersweet. The emptiness, the distance, is what establishes the relationships of attraction and lack between two lovers, but it is also closely linked to the activity of knowing. Both desire and knowledge reach out for something that is not there, something distant, and desire it. | en_UK |
