La collaborazione di Pietro Citati al «Corriere della Sera» (1° aprile 1973-10 agosto 1988)

Abstract

Secondo Pietro Citati se vogliamo conoscere il senso dell’esistenza dobbiamo aprire un libro perché al suo interno, nell’angolo più oscuro di un capitolo, c’è una frase scritta apposta per noi; se desideriamo raggiungere una vera comunione con la creatura amata, il mezzo più certo è di leggere nello stesso tempo il medesimo volume, comunicando con lei attraverso il fiume scavato dalle parole di un altro. La letteratura di tutti i tempi e di tutti i luoghi sembra senza segreti per lui, per questo motivo il titolo del Meridiano Mondadori a lui dedicato recita «da Omero a Nabokov». Sono stati analizzati alcuni anni del suo lavoro da critico per il «Corriere della Sera», precisamente quelli della sua prima esperienza al quotidiano di Via Solferino che va dal 1973 al 1988. Seguiremo le tracce da lui disegnate tra volumi e autori differenti e tenteremo di comprendere quali fossero le sue preferenze letterarie; ci si concentrerà soprattutto sul suo peculiare metodo di lavoro, che ha come base di partenza la conoscenza della biografia dell’autore, in particolare nel momento della genesi dell’opera nella sua mente. Il percorso tracciato non potrà che essere discontinuo, con salti tra diverse epoche e luoghi, partendo dalla Grecia antica tratteremo di autori ricadenti in ogni genere letterario come trascinati in un vortice che ha il suo centro nel romanzo europeo dell’Ottocento. Verrà trattata buona parte della letteratura mondiale: da Plutarco a Dickens, da Sant’Agostino a Mark Twain e poi Dostoevskij, Proust e Kafka, ma anche Joseph Roth, Giorgio Caproni e Omero, senza dimenticare i grandi amici Italo Calvino e Giorgio Manganelli.

According to Pietro Citati, if we want to know the meaning of existence we have to open a book because inside it, in the darkest corner of a chapter, there is a sentence written especially for us; if we wish to achieve true communion with the beloved creature, the surest means is to read the same volume at the same time, communicating with her through the river dug by the words of another. The literature of all times and all places seems to have no secrets for him, which is why the title of the Meridiano Mondadori dedicated to him reads "from Homer to Nabokov". Some years of his work as a critic for the «Corriere della Sera» have been analysed, precisely those of his first experience at the Via Solferino newspaper which goes from 1973 to 1988. We will follow the traces he drew between different volumes and authors and we will try to understand what his literary preferences were; we will focus above all on his peculiar working method, which has as its starting point the knowledge of the author's biography, in particular in the moment of the genesis of the work in his mind. The traced path can only be discontinuous, with leaps between different eras and places, starting from ancient Greece we will deal with authors falling into every literary genre as if dragged into a vortex that has its center in the nineteenth-century European novel. A large part of world literature will be treated: from Plutarch to Dickens, from Saint Augustine to Mark Twain and then Dostoevsky, Proust and Kafka, but also Joseph Roth, Giorgio Caproni and Homer, without forgetting the great friends Italo Calvino and Giorgio Manganelli.
