La peste del 1656-1657 a Savona attraverso l'operato del Magistrato di Sanità

Abstract

In questo elaborato analizzeremo in che modo la città di Savona affrontò la peste nel XVII secolo, attraverso lo studio e la lettura delle fonti storiche. L’analisi storica che viene proposta si basa in primo luogo sui documenti conservati presso l’Archivio di Stato della città di Savona. Nel primo capitolo spiegheremo che cos’è la peste, parleremo del suo sviluppo e della sua diffusione. L’idea è quella di partire da un quadro molto ampio, ovvero la presenza della peste in Europa, passare poi alla situazione generica in Italia, ed infine arrivare a Genova, terminando con il nostro approfondimento su come la città di Savona rispose a questa grande emergenza sanitaria. Il secondo capitolo sarà dedicato alla ricostruzione storica dell’evoluzione degli uffici sanitari, per comprendere da quali esigenze nacquero e con quali ruoli. Ci addentreremo nella storia di Savona e vedremo quali furono le misere di prevenzione che vennero adottate quando iniziarono a comparire i primi casi di malattia nelle zone limitrofe. Ci soffermeremo sui rapporti tra Savona e le città vicine attraverso la lettura di alcune corrispondenze. Il terzo ed il quarto capitolo saranno quelli in cui saranno prese maggiormente in esame le carte conservate in Archivio: grazie alla lettura del registro del Magistrato di Sanità potremmo comprendere la situazione in cui versava la città durante gli anni del contagio. Analizzeremo gli aiuti che il governo di Savona aveva erogato per gestire l’emergenza e per aiutare tutti coloro che ne avessero bisogno. Approfondiremo altri temi quali l’iter da seguire nel caso in cui si presentava la malattia, la gestione dei lazzaretti e della quarantena. In ultima analisi trarremo un bilancio finale delle vittime e di come la peste abbia influenzato e condizionato la vita di ogni cittadino savonese durante questo triennio. Vedremo il grande sforzo della popolazione e il duro lavoro dei medici, ai quali non sono mancati i riconoscimenti ed i meriti attribuiti.

In this paper we will analyze how the city of Savona dealt with the plague in the seventeenth century, through the study and reading of historical sources. The historical analysis that is proposed is based primarily on the documents kept in the State Archives of the city of Savona. In the first chapter we will explain what the plague is, we will talk about its development and its diffusion. The idea is to start from a very broad picture, the presence of the plague in Europe, then move on to the generic situation in Italy, and finally arrive in Genoa, ending with our in-depth analysis of how the city of Savona responded to this great emergency healthcare. The second chapter will be dedicated to the historical reconstruction of the evolution of health offices, to understand from which needs they arose and with which roles. We will delve into the history of Savona and see what were the poor prevention measures that were adopted when the first cases of disease began to appear in the neighboring areas. We will focus on the relationship between Savona and the neighboring cities by reading some correspondences. The third and fourth chapters will be those in which the papers kept in the Archive will be examined the most: thanks to the reading of the register of the Health Magistrate we will be able to understand the situation in which the city found itself during the years of the contagion. We will analyze the aid that the Savona government had provided to manage the emergency and to help all those in need. We will explore other topics such as the procedure to follow in the event that the disease occurs, the management of hospitals and quarantine. Ultimately we will draw a final balance of the victims and how the plague has influenced and conditioned the life of every citizen of Savona during this three-year period. We will see the great effort of the population and the hard work of the doctors, who have not lacked the recognitions and merits attributed.
