UNA VISIONE CRITICA DELLA RICERCA ANIMALE: TRADUZIONE E ANALISI

Abstract

Il presente elaborato si propone di affrontare il tema la sperimentazione animale. Nel fare ciò, sono stati selezionati due capitoli tratti dal volume Animal Experimentation: Working Towards a Paradigm Change (2019) di Kathrin Herrmann e Kimberley Jayne, una miscellanea di articoli scientifici di autori differenti, il cui intento è quello di mettere in luce gli aspetti problematici della ricerca animale, incentivando il passaggio a una sperimentazione sempre più rivolta all’integrazione dei principi delle 3R (reduction, refinement, replacement). Gli articoli scelti ai fini della traduzione sono il capitolo 13, intitolato Human Wrongs in Animal Research: A Focus on Moral Injury and Reification, scritto da Jane Johnson e Anna Smajdor, e il capitolo 14 dal titolo Critically Evaluating Animal Research, scritto da Andrew Knight.

Dall’analisi di testi proposti è possibile osservare come anche determinate tipologie testuali, quali gli articoli scientifici, presentino delle peculiarità che permettono a chi scrive di esprimere il proprio punto di vista. Inoltre, si è posto in evidenza come testi racchiusi nello stesso volume possano affrontare lo stesso tema, quello della sperimentazione animale, impiegando diverse strategie nella presentazione dei dati a sostegno della propria tesi e nella scelta delle strutture linguistiche impiegate nell’espressione del proprio punto di vista. Con questi presupposti, nella sezione successiva alla traduzione degli articoli scientifici, si è cercato di analizzare più nel dettaglio le diverse strategie impiegate dai diversi autori degli articoli scientifici presentati, con particolare riguardo all’utilizzo del linguaggio valutativo e la presentazione del punto di vista dei diversi autori, tenendo come punto di riferimento primario il volume scritto da Hunston e Thompson Evaluation in Text. Authorial Stance and the Construction of Discourse (2001).

This dissertation seeks to explore the theme of animal experimentation, with a focus on the volume Animal Experimentation: Working Towards a Paradigm Change (2019), edited by Kathrin Herrmann and Kimberley Jayne, which constitutes a miscellaneous collection of scientific articles written by different authors. This book offers a broad scope into the problematic aspects around the use of animals for experiments and promotes the incorporation of the 3R principles (reduction, refinement, replacement) of animal research. The articles selected for translation purposes are the following: chapter 13, with the title Human Wrongs in Animal Research: A Focus on Moral Injury and Reification, written by Jane Johnson and Anna Smajdor; and chapter 14, entitled Critically Evaluating Animal Research and written by Andrew Knight.

By analysing these texts, it was possible to observe how even text types, such as scientific articles, allow the writers to express their point of view. Moreover, it has been highlighted how texts collected in the same volume may address the same topic, that of animal experimentation, by using different strategies in regard to the presentation of data in support of their hypothesis and the choice of the linguistic devices employed. With these premises, the section following the translations of the scientific articles seeks to further analyse the strategies used by the authors to express their point of view, through the use of evaluative language. In order to do so, the theoretical framework is mainly provided by the volume Evaluation in Text. Authorial Stance and the Construction of Discourse (2001) by Hunston e Thompson.
