Il giardino «romantico» del Palazzo Reale di Napoli: proposta progettuale di restauro e valorizzazione

Abstract

Il presente lavoro di tesi ha come oggetto di analisi il giardino ‘romantico’ del Palazzo Reale di Napoli. Si tratta di un’area di 1,5 ettari realizzata nel 1842 dall’Arch. Gaetano Genovese e dal botanico e giardiniere tedesco Friedrich Dehnhardt e che, attualmente, non risulta essere adeguatamente valorizzata. L’analisi di fonti iconografiche, cartografiche e bibliografiche ha permesso di ricostruire le diversi fasi che definiscono l’evoluzione del palinsesto del giardino e di comprenderne in tal modo gli aspetti peculiari che lo contraddistinguono. Tali aspetti sono: una forte connessione con il contesto, un ricco e variegato collezionismo botanico - attualmente assente - e la fontana, elemento centrale del giardino che determinava le assialità con via San Carlo e Piazza del Plebiscito, ad oggi non presente. Negli anni Venti del Novecento fu realizzato un altro elemento che permane ancora oggi ovvero un viale rettilineo realizzato dall’Ing. Camillo Guerra, il quale rappresenta una componente interessante in quanto unico elemento formale all’interno di un giardino irregolare, ma che attualmente non risulta essere integrato con lo stile informale del sito. Scopo del presente elaborato è quello di proporre un progetto di restauro volto a conservare e valorizzare entrambe le fasi del giardino, ripristinando due elementi che ad oggi risultano essere assenti e che invece costituiscono la chiave di lettura del luogo ovvero il collezionismo botanico e la fontana. L’elaborato incentra la proposta di progetto sia sulla componente vegetale esistente che su quella di nuova introduzione: per quest’ultima, le specie sono state selezionate dalle trascrizioni degli elenchi botanici del Dehnhardt compatibilmente alle attuali condizioni climatiche del sito. La fontana prevede il restauro del bacino originario e la rifunzionalizzazione dell’impianto idrico che presenterà un sistema di accumulo e di ricircolo dell’acqua atto ad alimentare lo zampillo di progetto.

The ‘romantic’ garden of the Royal Palace of Naples is the aim the object of the thesis. It is an area of 1.5 hectares built by Arch. Gaetano Genovese and the German botanist and gardener Friedrich Dehnhardt in 1842 and that, currently, is not being adequately exploited. The analysis of iconographic, cartographic and bibliographical sources has allowed to reconstruct the different phases that define the evolution of the garden’s palimpsest and in this way to understand the peculiar aspects that distinguish it. These aspects are: a strong connection with the context, a rich and varied botanical collecting - now absent - and the fountain, central element of the garden that determined the axiality with Via San Carlo and Piazza del Plebiscito, not present today. In the twenties of the twentieth century another element was created that still remains today: a straight avenue built by Eng. Camillo Guerra, which is an interesting component as the only formal element inside an irregular garden, but which currently does not appear to be integrated with the informal style of the site. The purpose of this project is to propose a restoration project aimed at preserving and enhancing both phases of the garden, restoring two elements that today are absent and that instead constitute the key to understanding the place: botanical collecting and the fountain. The draft focuses the project proposal on both the existing and the newly introduced plant component: for the latter, the species were selected from the transcripts of the botanical lists of Dehnhardt compatible with the current climatic conditions of the site. The fountain provides for the restoration of the original basin and the re-functionalization of the water system that will present a system of accumulation and recirculation of water to feed the project spout.
