Il rapporto tra filosofia e letteratura nel pensiero di Richard Rorty

Abstract

In questo elaborato affronterò una prima parte più teorica, per introdurre Rorty e collocarlo nel contesto storico-filosofico del suo tempo. Ripercorrerò il suo passaggio da una corrente all’altra, sottolineando come egli approvi il cambiamento nel momento in cui non ci si riconosce più in una determinata definizione. Affronterò la questione della filosofia analitica e del perché Rorty la ritenga troppo chiusa, in favore del pragmatismo. Approfondirò le origini della svolta linguistica soffermandomi sui suoi capostipiti. Mi soffermerò soprattutto sul suo nuovo modo di intendere la filosofia, sulla necessità del rinnovo dei vocabolari e delle ridescrizioni. Spiegherò meglio cosa intenda con il termine contingenza e perché lo applichi al linguaggio, all’io e alla società. Arriverò al fulcro della sua originalità parlando del confronto tra il filosofo e il poeta e il loro ruolo sociologico, fino a considerare la società utopica liberale come modello ideale in cui vivere, il cui capostipite è l’ironico liberale. Analizzerò la questione della supremazia della letteratura prendendo a modello noti romanzieri dell’ultimo secolo per arrivare a parlare di come i romanzi e le forme d’arte ci aiutino a essere migliori, meno crudeli e più solidali, alcune delle ragioni che avvalorano la sua superiorità rispetto alla filosofia. Nella parte finale, invece, mi occuperò di due forme di linguaggio in particolare, quello di genere e quello artificiale. Anche qui riporterò esempi concreti contemporanei e spiegherò perché il pensiero di Rorty è perfettamente adattabile a ogni epoca storica.

In this work I will face a more theoretical first part, to introduce Rorty and place him in the historical-philosophical context of his time. I will retrace his passage from one current to another, underlining how he approves the change when one no longer recognizes himself in a certain definition. I will face up to the question of analytic philosophy and why Rorty considers it too closed in favor of pragmatism. I will investigate the origins of the linguistic turn by focusing on its founders. I will dwell above all on his new way of understanding philosophy, on the need for the renewal of vocabularies and redescriptions. I will explain better what it is meant by the term contingency and why he applies it to language, to the self and to society. I will arrive at the fulcrum of his originality by talking about the confrontation between the philosopher and the poet and their sociological role, to the point of considering the liberal utopian society as an ideal model in which to live, whose progenitor is the ironic liberal. I will analyze the question of the supremacy of literature by modeling well-known novelists of the last century to get to talk about how novels and art forms help us to be better, less cruel and more supportive, some of the reasons that support its superiority compared to philosophy. In the final part, instead, I will deal with two forms of language in particular, the gender on one side and the artificial on the other. Here too I will report concrete contemporary examples and explain why Rorty's thought is perfectly adaptable to any historical era.
