In recent years, the sustainability of buildings and the BIM methodology have been at the center of the architectural debate, this paper was created with the aim of investigating the possible connections and potential that arise from the union of these two themes, with particular attention to wooden constructions. In the first part of the thesis, BIM and LCA will be introduced. These two major topics are presented as complex systems whose operational tools allow a project concept and management different from the so-called "traditional" practices and for this reason they are necessary in the contemporary perspective of sustainable development. Life Cycle Thinking is a sustainable approach to the consumption of resources and the use of products that derives from the concept of circular economy and allows us to consider the entire life cycle as a product or service "from cradle to grave" in order to minimize their impacts (environmental, economic and social) and provide for proper recycling or disposal. From the LCT comes an operational tool for a meticulous investigation of the entire life cycle of a product which is the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Building Information Modeling (BIM), on the other hand, represents an opportunity to rethink the way architecture is designed; the BIM model can be considered as a large interactive container in which each modeled element is a database of information concerning both geometric (such as volume, area, shape) and physical (such as material, thermal performance, weight) characteristics. In order to have comparisons and results as plausible as possible, it was decided to investigate BIM modeling and LCA analysis through the study of three small wooden buildings, each built according to a different construction technology but deriving from a single basic study model. The three construction types chosen are: Platform / balloon frame, Timber frame and XLAM.en_UK
