La chiesa di San Pietro in Varatella ed il mito dello sbarco del Principe degli Apostoli in Liguria

Abstract

Il presente studio verte sulla chiesa di San Pietro in Varatella e sulla leggenda che attribuisce la sua fondazione a san Pietro, nonché al primato quale prima chiesa della penisola Italica. Il monastero di San Pietro in Varatella ha avuto un ruolo di primaria importanza nella storia medievale della Liguria ponentina. La posizione strategica e le numerose donazioni, i rapporti con la vicina Albingaunum, con il monastero dell’isola Gallinaria ed il basso Piemonte hanno reso l’abbazia protagonista delle vicende medievali. Alla base di questo suo potere vi è senza dubbio l’attribuzione della fondazione della chiesa all’apostolo Pietro e del monastero benedettino a Carlo Magno, ciò è riportato in una cronaca trecentesca basata sulla trascrizione di documenti originali dell’epoca carolingia. La trattazione artistica si è concentrata sulla sola chiesa di San Pietro in Varatella, la più fedele al periodo medievale, anche se le informazioni storiche ed archeologiche ci inducono a ritenere che la prima edificazione sia antecedente alla fondazione benedettina. Per quanto riguarda l’affresco, l’anonimo artista è inseribile tra i pittori liguri-piemontesi attivi nel Quattrocento; rappresenta San Pietro benedicente in cattedra, in abiti papali e con il triregno. Interessante è il legame artistico con le altre chiese facenti parte delle dipendenze del monastero (tra cui San Giorgio in Balestrino e San Nicolò in Bardineto), in cui riscontriamo la caratteristica degli artisti medievali di acquisire tecniche e stili appartenenti ad altri autori. A conferma del radicamento del mito della fondazione petrina della Chiesa ligure, vi è un affresco all’interno della Cattedrale di San Lorenzo a Genova, che rappresenta l’apostolo in qualità di fondatore della Chiesa genovese, opera nata dal desiderio di Jacopo da Varagine di celebrare il mito delle origini.

This study is focused on the church of San Pietro in Varatella and the legend that attributes its foundation to saint Peter, as the first church in Italy. The monastery of San Pietro in Varatella played a major role in the medieval history of Western Liguria. Its strategic position and numerous donations, its relations with neighbouring Albingaunum, the monastery of the Gallinaria island and southern Piedmont made the abbey a prominent presence in medieval events. Its power was undoubtedly based on the attribution of the church's foundation to the apostle Peter and of the benedictine monastery to Charlemagne, as recorded in a 14th-century chronicle based on the transcription of original documents from the Carolingian period. The artistic description focuses only on the church of San Pietro in Varatella, as most faithful to the medieval period, even if historical and archaeological information leads us to believe that the first building predates benedictine foundation. As for the fresco, the anonymous artist can be inserted among the Ligurian-Piedmontese painters active in the fifteenth century; it depicts Saint Peter giving a blessing from his chair. The artistic link with the other churches that were part of the monastery's dependencies confirms the tendency by medieval artists to borrow techniques and styles from other artists, while also concealing their characterising traits. A fresco inside the cathedral of San Lorenzo in Genoa confirms the legend of the foundation of the ligurian Church by saint Peter. It depicts the apostle as the founder of the Genoese Church and was inspired by Jacopo da Varagine's desire to celebrate the legend of its origins.
