L'archivio Camper & Nicholsons: un confronto progettuale tra i J Class di Charles durante il periodo di Coppa America

Abstract

Lo storico cantiere ultracentenario Camper & Nicholsons ha di recente digitalizzato parte del suo archivio cartaceo detenuto tra il Greenwich National Maritime Museum e i cantieri dismessi di Gosport e Southampton. Così facendo sul sito web www.cnyachting.com sono apparse in maniera gratuita, oltre 3.500 imbarcazioni tra yacht a vela in legno, battelli a vapore e scafi in vetroresina. In questa Tesi a metà tra la storia e il progetto, l’archivio è fonte principale di ricerca ed è interrogato in un preciso momento storico (1930-1937) che altro non è che il periodo dei J-Class di Charles E. Nicholson. L’obiettivo è quello di aumentare genericamente la cultura sui J Class e in particolare i progetti originari all’epoca del varo dei quattro J Class da lui progettati (SHAMROCK V, VELSHEDA, ENDEAVOUR I ed ENDEAVOUR II). La Tesi risponde anche all’importanza di avere un archivio e ai suoi possibili usi nel campo del restauro. Tramite un lavoro di interpretazione, comprensione e rielaborazione sono stati ricostruiti dal punto di vista storico-progettuale le barche sopra menzionate. Si sono evinti tratti comuni e differenze nella progettualità di Charles che hanno fatto luce sulle morfologie costruttive, le tecniche impiegate e i materiali utilizzati. Per questo scopo, l’archivio si è rivelato una buona base di studio ma non sufficientemente idoneo a rispondere a tutte le domande che sono scaturite dalla consultazione dei disegni archiviati. Si è reso necessario quindi, la consultazione di materiali tra loro eterogenei come gli scritti dell’epoca di Ian Dear e Uffa Fox, restauri di progetti dello stesso periodo storico o materiale fotografico di vari e regate di Coppa America.

The historic over hundred years Camper & Nicholsons shipyard has recently digitized part of its paper archive held between the Greenwich National Maritime Museum and the disused Gosport and Southampton shipyard. In doing so, on the website www.cnyachting.com, over 3,500 boats appeared for free, including wooden sailing yachts, steamboats and fiberglass hulls. In this thesis halfway between history and design, the archive is the main source of research and is questioned at a precise historical moment (1930-1937) which is none other than the period of Charles E. Nicholson's J-Class. The goal is to generically increase the culture of J Classes and in particular the original projects at the time of the launch of the four J Classes he designed (SHAMROCK V, VELSHEDA, ENDEAVOUR I and ENDEAVOUR II). The thesis also responds to the importance of having an archive and its possible uses in the field of restoration. Through a work of interpretation, understanding and re-elaboration, the boats mentioned above have been reconstructed from the historical-design point of view. Common traits and differences in Charles' design were evident which shed light on the construction morphologies, the techniques and the materials used. For this purpose, the archive proved to be a good basis for study but not sufficiently suitable for answering all the questions that arose from consulting the archived drawings. It was therefore necessary to consult heterogeneous materials such as the writings of the time by Ian Dear and Uffa Fox, restorations of projects from the same historical period or photographic material from various America's Cup regattas.
