Gli onori per la sacerdotessa Timokrite: studio sul santuario di Aglauro e sul decreto IG II3 1 1002

Abstract

In seguito al ritrovamento dell’iscrizione attica IG II3 1 1002 databile al III sec. a.C da parte dell’Archeologo George S. Dontas, nel 1980, è stato possibile individuare il punto esatto in cui era localizzato il santuario di Aglauro, all’interno del cui temenos l’iscrizione si trovava. Il luogo di culto era situato sul versante orientale della collina dell’Acropoli di Atene, a differenza di quanto si era ritenuto fino a quel momento. Questa scoperta ha contribuito a migliorare la conoscenza dell’antica topografia ateniese. L’iscrizione è in onore di una sacerdotessa che ha prestato servizio presso il santuario di Aglauro e si è distinta per la cura posta nel suo lavoro. La donna, di nome Timokrite, viene onorata con una stele per volere sia dell’Assemblea cittadina sia della Bulè, testimoniando il grado di autorità e rilevanza che aveva assunto. Il ritrovamento di monumenti in onore di sacerdotesse ateniesi, come steli e statue, ha spinto gli studiosi ad indagare sul ruolo femminile nella società dall’età arcaica all’età ellenistica. Il primo capitolo del presente lavoro prende in esame la figura della sacerdotessa e la sua importanza a livello sociale e religioso. L’attenzione è stata rivolta in particolare alle sacerdotesse della città di Atene, in quanto la figura sacerdotale presentava caratteristiche differenti a seconda della polis e del tempio in cui prestava servizio. Nel secondo capitolo, invece, si propone uno studio sul santuario di Aglauro e sul culto che vi era praticato e si ricostruiscono le vicende che, anche grazie alla stele in esame, solo recentemente hanno consentito agli archeologi di individuarne l’esatta posizione. Il terzo capitolo presenta l’edizione della stele IG II3 1 1002 per Timokrite, una proposta di traduzione e il commento.

Following the discovery of the Attic inscription IG II3 1 1002 dated to the 3rd century B.C. by the archaeologist George S. Dontas, in 1980, it was possible to identify the exact location of the sanctuary of Aglaurus, within whose temenos the inscription was placed. The sanctuary was located on the eastern slope of the Acropolis of Athens and this discovery contributed to a better understanding of the ancient Athenian topography. The inscription is in honour of a priestess, Timokrite, who served at the sanctuary of Aglaurus and was celebrated with a stele at the behest of both the city Assembly and the Bulè, testifying to the degree of authority and importance she had assumed. The discovery of monuments honouring Athenian priestesses, such as stelae and statues, has prompted scholars to investigate the role of women in society from the Archaic to the Hellenistic period. The first chapter of this work examines the figure of the priestess and her importance in society and religion. Particular attention was paid to the priestesses of Athens, since the sacerdotal role had different traits depending on the polis and the temple in which it took place. The second chapter proposes a study of the sanctuary of Aglaurus and the cult that was practised there, and reconstructs the studies that have only recently enabled archaeologists to identify its exact location. The third chapter presents the edition of the stele IG II3 1 1002 for Timokrite, its translation and a commentary.
