Il contributo delle analisi tecniche scientifiche alla "questione giottesca'': indagini sulle storie francescane di Assisi.

Abstract

L’elaborato verte sulla realizzazione delle Storie di S. Francesco, dipinte alla fine del secolo XIII ad Assisi. L’obiettivo è verificare oltreché dimostrare il contributo delle analisi tecniche scientifiche allo studio delle opere d’arte ed al dibattito critico della ‘questione giottesca’. L’indagine è fondata sull’osservazione, l’analisi e l’interpretazione dei dati raccolti durante i restauri eseguiti dall’I.C.R. sui ventotto dipinti. Le affinità riscontrate fra gli affreschi avvalorano l’identificazione di un unico responsabile dell’intero progetto e dell’organizzazione del lavoro all’interno della basilica. Le differenze rilevate fra i dipinti, invece, trovano spiegazione nel fatto che questo artista ha delegato parte dell’esecuzione a collaboratori diversi per abilità e formazione. In conclusione, le Storie di S. Francesco sono l’esito di una grande impresa pittorica compiuta dal capo-maestro insieme agli aiuti che ne hanno seguìto le direttive.

The present study focuses on the execution of St. Francis Series which were painted at the end of the 13th century at Assisi. The aim is to demonstrate the fundamental role of technical-scientific analysis in artworks examination and in the critical debate known as 'questione giottesca'. The research is based on the observation, the analysis and the interpretation of the data assembled during the restorations conducted by I.C.R. on the twenty-eight paintings. The affinities between the frescos support the identification of a single person who was responsible for the entire project and the work organization within the basilica. The differences between the paintings are due to the decision of this artist who delegated part of the execution to different collaborators both in terms of skill and training. In conclusion, the St. Francis Series are the result of a great pictorial enterprise completed by the master together with the assistants which followed his instructions.
