Image Schemas e letteratura: introduzione e analisi in alcuni racconti di Edgar Allan Poe e Sherwood Anderson.

Abstract

Lo studio degli Image Schemas è relativamente recente. È stata caratterizzata, negli ultimi trent'anni, da studi volti a descrivere gli aspetti convenzionali della metafora: negando il prevalente concetto “decorativo” della metafora e la sua definizione di “figura retorica”, tipica dell' uso letterario. Nella linguistica cognitiva, gli Image Schemas sono stati introdotti come generalizzazioni mentali derivate da esperienze incarnate che traducono concetti come “contenimento” o “movimento fonte-percorso-obiettivo”. Queste relazioni possono essere trovate nella cognizione umana come schemi di informazione utili al nostro ragionamento, come fattore di base per il linguaggio astratto e come mattoni concettuali per concetti ed eventi. In effetti, l'Embodiment gioca un ruolo essenziale nelle rappresentazioni semantiche, sia concrete che astratte. Il nostro sistema percettivo e motorio non ha un impatto solo sul modo in cui interagiamo fisicamente con il mondo esterno, ma anche sul modo in cui strutturiamo cognitivamente gli input esterni. Ciò influisce anche sul modo in cui leggiamo e interiorizziamo le opere letterarie, che sono ricche di metafore, che la maggioranza delle volte vengono analizzate come semplici figure retoriche. Ecco perché questa ricerca vuole fare una panoramica dello studio della Linguistica Cognitiva (Capitolo 1), andando avanti con i Modelli Cognitivi Idealizzati e di conseguenza evidenziando la natura degli Image Schemas (Capitolo 2), per guardare infine criticamente come la letteratura li applica, nei racconti di Edgar Allan Poe e Sherwood Anderson (Capitolo 3). Lo scopo di questa ricerca è identificare i tipi di Image Schemas e analizzare il significato di ciascuno di essi nelle seguenti opere: The Tell-Tale Heart, The Black Cat, The Masque of the Red Death, Hands, Paper Pills e Sophistication.

The study of Image Schemas is relatively recent. It has been characterized, in the last thirty years, by studies made in order to describe the conventional aspects of the metaphor: denying the prevailing “decorative” concept of the metaphor and its definition as a “figure of speech”, typical of the literary use. Modern theories have focused on what emerged from observing everyday linguistic productions, interpreting them as reflections of cognitive habits proper to the human mind, or as expressive conventions determined by linguistic use and needs of communication. In Cognitive Linguistics, Image Schemas were introduced as mental generalisations from Embodied experiences capturing notions such as Containment, Support and Source-Path-Goal movement. These relationships can be found in human cognition as information schemas for our reasoning, as a grounding factor for abstract language and as conceptual building blocks for concepts and events. Indeed, Embodiment plays an essential role in both concrete and abstract semantic representations. Our perceptual and motor system does not only impact on the way we physically interact with the external world but also on the way we cognitively structure external inputs. This also affects the way we read and internalize literary works, which are plentiful of metaphors, as merely figures of speech. This is why this research wants to make an overview of the study of Cognitive Linguistics (Chapter 1), going forward with the Idealized Cognitive Models and consequently pointing out the nature of Image schemas (Chapter 2), in order to finally look critically at how literature applies them, in Edgar Allan Poe's and Sherwood Anderson's short stories (Chapter 3). The aim of this research is to identify the types of Image Schemas and to analyze the meaning of each of them in the following works: The Tell-Tale Heart, The Black Cat, The Masque of the Red Death, Hands, Paper Pills and Sophistication.
