"Hablar para ser contado": la riscrittura di Laila Lalami dei Naufragios di Cabeza de Vaca

Abstract

Nella Relación cinquecentesca di Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca si narrano le vicissitudini disastrose della spedizione floridiana del governatore Pánfilo de Narvaez, i molteplici naufragi, l’errare disorientato dei sopravvissuti in un entroterra freddo e ostile, la loro schiavitù presso le popolazioni indigene e infine l’elevazione a sciamani e curatori miracolosi, fino al raggiungimento della salvezza e al ritorno in patria in seno alla Corona spagnola. Partendo da quest’opera storico-letteraria Laila Lalami dà voce a uno dei pochi superstiti dei Naufragios, lo schiavo Estebanico «negro, alárabe, natural de Azamor», citato dal narratore Alvar Núñez solo poche volte e in modo sfuggente. In un tempo non ben definito lontano dagli eventi narrati, da qualche posto non precisato del continente americano, il narratore Mustafa/Estebanico racconta la sua storia, la sua verità, molto diversa da quella testimoniata dal suo «rival story teller», come lui stesso rivela. Questo lavoro investiga il rapporto tra l’opera primaria cinquecentesca e l’opera di riscrittura di Laila Lalami, The Moor’s Account. Attraverso l’analisi comparativa di passi dei due testi, per quanto riguarda gli aspetti storici, socioculturali e strutturali, ho esaminato gli elementi di divergenza e affinità. Quindi ho interpretato il lavoro iperletterario dell’autrice a noi contemporanea. Con un intervento di transfocalizzazione Lalami dà voce ad una voce taciuta nei secoli e rimasta oppressa dalla narrativa dominante. Attraverso scelte linguistiche e stilistiche precise decostruisce i discorsi egemoni dell’opera cinquecentesca e ricostruisce dando vita a una nuova opera letteraria.

The 16th-century Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca’s Relación recounts the disastrous vicissitudes of governor Pánfilo de Narvaez's Floridian expedition, the multiple shipwrecks, the disoriented err of the survivors in a cold and hostile hinterland, their slavery among the Indians, their elevation to shamans and miraculous curators and finally their salvation and return home to the Spanish Crown. From this historical-literary work Laila Lalami gives voice to one of the few survivors in Naufragios, the slave Estebanico «negro, alárabe, natural de Azamor», mentioned by the narrator Alvar Núñez only a few times and elusively. In an undefined time far from the events narrated, from some unspecified place of the American continent, the narrator Mustafa/Estebanico tells his story, his truth, quite different from that witnessed by his «rival story teller», as he reveals. This work investigates the relationship between the sixteenth-century primary work and Laila Lalami's rewriting, The Moor's Account. Through the comparative analysis of the passages of the two texts, with regard to historical, sociocultural and structural aspects, I have examined the elements of divergence and affinity. Then I interpreted the contemporary author's hyperliterary work. With a transfocalization intervention, Lalami gives voice to a voice silenced over the centuries and remained oppressed by the dominant narrative. Through precise linguistic and stylistic choices, she deconstructs the hegemonic discourses of the sixteenth-century work and rebuilds giving life to a new literary work.
