I papiri greci dell'archivio templare di Soknopaiou Nesos

Abstract

L’elaborato intende studiare i papiri greci del cosiddetto archivio templare di Soknopaiou Nesos. Si tratta di un interessante archivio bilingue, prevalentemente in lingua demotica, databile al II secolo a.C., nel quale sono presenti 21 testi greci, di cui un unico frammento letterario.

Nella prima parte è presentata una descrizione dettagliata della storia archeologica del sito, il quale è attualmente in corso di scavo a opera della Missione dell’Università del Salento. Questa parte è seguita da una panoramica generale sui sacerdoti, sul culto e sull’organizzazione economica della "kome". L’obiettivo è fornire un quadro completo di quello che doveva essere il villaggio templare di Soknopaiou Nesos nei secoli della sua occupazione (III a.C. - III d.C.). Dopodiché, l’attenzione si sposta sullo studio specifico dei seguenti testi greci, editi per la prima volta nel 1901 da Grenfell e Hunt in “The Amherst Papyri, II”: P. Amh. II 10, 30, 33, 34, 35, 40, 41, 42, 43, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 161, 162, 163, 164. Sulla base delle immagini dei papiri, consultabili sul sito della Morgan Library, è stata proposta la trascrizione dei testi, la traduzione e un commento, che tiene conto degli aspetti sia materiali che contenutistici. Per P. Amh. II 58v, 161, 162, 163, 164, solo descritti nel volume curato da Grenfell e Hunt, sono state avanzate qui, per la prima volta, delle proposte di trascrizione. Per la ricerca prosopografica e per una comprensione più completa di molti di questi papiri è stato fondamentale il confronto con quelli demotici dell’archivio, i quali, in parte, sono stati pubblicati nel 1975 da Bresciani nel primo volume di “L’Archivio demotico del tempio Soknopaiu Nesos”.

Chiude l’elaborato una disamina sui problemi che riguardano la storia di questi testi e la loro definizione di ‘archivio’. Si tratta, infatti, di papiri trovati durante scavi non controllati, riguardo ai quali, dunque, non abbiamo dati precisi del contesto di ritrovamento.

The aim of this paper is to study the Greek papyri of the so-called Soknopaiou Nesos' temple archive. This is an interesting bilingual archive, mainly in the demotic language, dating to the 2nd century BC, that contains 21 Greek papyri, among which only one is a literary fragment.

The first part presents a detailed description of the archaeological history of the site, which is currently being excavated by the University of Salento Mission. This part is followed by a general overview of the priests, the cult and the economic organization of the "kome". The purpose is to show what the temple village of Soknopaiou Nesos must have been during the centuries of its occupation (III BC - III AD). After that, the focus shifts to the specific study of the following Greek texts, first published by Grenfell and Hunt in “The Amherst Papyri, II” (1901): P. Amh. II 10, 30, 33, 34, 35, 40, 41, 42, 43, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 161, 162, 163, 164. On the basis of images of the papyri, which can be consulted on the Morgan Library website, each text is accompanied by a transcription, a translation and a commentary, which take into account both material and content aspects. For the texts of P. Amh. II 58v, 161, 162, 163, 164, only described in the volume edited by Grenfell and Hunt, here proposals for transcription have been made for the first time. For the prosopographical research and a more complete understanding of many of these papyri, a comparison with the demotic papyri of the archive, which were partly published by Bresciani in “L'Archivio demotico del tempio Soknopaiu Nesos, I” (1975), has been essential.

The paper concludes with an examination of the problems concerning the history of these texts and their definition as 'archive'. These papyri were found during unsupervised excavations and therefore any precise data on the context of their discovery are absent.
