Il dialogo interreligioso a teatro: Nathan il saggio di Gotthold Ephraim Lessing.

Abstract

L’elaborato nasce con l’intento di analizzare l’operato del pensatore illuminista tedesco Gotthold Ephraim Lessing durante gli anni di permanenza presso la cittadina di Wolfenbüttel e la stesura dell’opera teatrale "Nathan il Saggio". Il dialogo interreligioso è la tematica centrale capace di tenere insieme i due capitoli che si succedono all’interno di queste pagine. Il primo, “Un grande viaggio: la disputa sui frammenti”, si propone di esaminare le tappe del dibattito religioso sorto all’indomani della pubblicazione da parte di Lessing dell’opera I Frammenti dell’Anonimo di Wolfenbüttel. Nel trasferimento da Amburgo lo studioso aveva portato con sé un manoscritto inedito, Apologie oder Schutzschrift für die vernünftigen Verehrer Gottes, dell’orientalista e teologo Hermann Samuel Reimarus. Il testo, contenente una critica radicale nei confronti delle Sacre Scritture, poteva essere usato per sferrare un violento attacco alla Chiesa protestante. Per questo motivo, sulla rivista della Biblioteca di Wolfenbüttel vedono la luce alcuni frammenti dell’opera di Reimarus, riportati in forma anonima. La loro pubblicazione determinò l’emergere di uno scontro di natura religiosa, estesosi poi in tutto il territorio tedesco, che vedrà coinvolti i maggiori rappresentati dell’ortodossia teologica protestante. Sarà l’intervento del duca ad impedire la pubblicazione dei Frammenti. Lessing trova però il modo di aggirare la censura attraverso la composizione di un’opera teatrale. Il secondo capitolo, “Il dialogo interreligioso a teatro: Nathan il saggio”, si propone di affrontare la genesi del capolavoro e l’analisi dei cinque atti che lo compongono. Questa fiaba mette in scena il dialogo interreligioso raccontando una storia di amicizia tra un saggio mercante ebreo, il sultano di Gerusalemme e un cavaliere templare cristiano. Dapprima divisi, i tre protagonisti arriveranno invece a comprendere come la vera religione sia solo quella che rende l’uomo migliore, la religione dell’umano.

The work was created with the intention of analyzing the work of the German Enlightenment thinker Gotthold Ephraim Lessing during the years of his stay in the town of Wolfenbüttel and the writing of the play "Nathan the Wise". Interreligious dialogue is the central theme capable of holding together the two chapters that follow one another within these pages. The first, "A great journey: the dispute over the fragments", aims to examine the stages of the religious debate that arose after Lessing's publication of Wolfenbüttel's "The Fragments of the Anonymous". On his transfer from Hamburg, the scholar had brought with him an unpublished manuscript, "Apologie oder Schutzschrift für die vernünftigen Verehrer Gottes", by the orientalist and theologian Hermann Samuel Reimarus. The text, containing a radical criticism of the Holy Scriptures, could be used to launch a violent attack on the Protestant Church. For this reason, some fragments of Reimarus's work reported anonymously, come to light in the magazine of the Wolfenbüttel library. Their publication led to the emergence of a clash of a religious nature, which then extended throughout the German territory, which will involve the major representatives of Protestant theological orthodoxy. It will be the Duke's intervention to prevent the publication of the Fragments. However, Lessing finds a way to circumvent censorship through the composition of a play. The second chapter, "Inter-religious dialogue in the theater: Nathan the Wise", aims to address the genesis of the masterpiece and the analysis of the five acts that make it up. This fairy tale stages interreligious dialogue by telling a story of friendship between a wise Jewish merchant, the Sultan of Jerusalem, and a Christian Templar knight. At first, divided, the three protagonists will instead come to understand how true religion is only the one that makes a man better, the religion of the human.
