Archeologia e Storia del castello di Policastro Bussentino – Santa Marina (SA)

Abstract

L’oggetto di questa ricerca è il Castello di Policastro Bussentino e come si è evoluta la struttura e la funzione dell'edificio tra la tarda antichità e la fine del XVI secolo. Il toponimo “Policastro B.no” si trova frequentemente nell'archivio storico, nei documenti che documentano la politica militare dal periodo bizantino al periodo di governo baronale alla fine del XV secolo. La posizione topografica di Policastro B.no offre una base militare strategica per il controllo sia del Golfo di Policastro sul Mar Mediterraneo che dell'entroterra circostante attraverso un sistema di torri. Questa ricerca si propone di ricostruire l'aspetto del Castello nel corso dei secoli incrociando i dati della documentazione archeologica alle testimonianze letterarie e i documentarie. Esse serviranno, inoltre, per discutere come il Castello di Policastro fosse percepito come centro di potere dalla Tarda Antichità al rinascimento.

The subject of this research is the Castle of Policastro Bussentino and how the structure and function of the building evolved between Late Antiquity and the late XVI century. The place-name “Policastro B.no” is found frequently in the historical archive, in records documenting the military politics from the Byzantine period to the period of baronial rule at the end of the XV century. The topographical location of Policastro B.no offers a strategic military base for the control of both the Gulf of Policastro on the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding inland through a system of towers. This research aims to reconstruct the appearance of the Castle over the centuries using evidence from the archaeological record. The literature and archive documents will be used to discuss how the Castle of Policastro was perceived as a centre of power over this period. This thesis will examine the evolution of the appearance and function of the Castle of Policastro Bussentino between Late Antiquity and the late XVI century.
