Il verbo thelo nei papiri documentari di età tolemaica

Abstract

Partendo da J. LEE, Auxiliary θέλω, in The Language of the papyri, ed. T.V. Evans e D. D. Obbink, Oxford 2010, ci si propone di studiare l'utilizzo del verbo (ἐ)θέλω nei testi dei papiri documentari di epoca tolemaica (III a.C.-I a.C.), analizzandolo dal punto di vista morfologico, sintattico e semantico, considerando l'evoluzione che lo stesso verbo, con valore di ausiliare, acquisterà nella formazione del futuro perifrastico. Considerando il tipo di testo, sia esso una lettera ufficiale o privata, un contratto o una semplice ricevuta, si è cercato di comprendere la funzione del verbo (ἐ)θέλω nella lingua quotidiana, anche riguardo all'estrazione culturale degli scriventi, in prospettiva diacronica. Nei testi in cui è documentato anche il verbo βούλομαι, si è cercato di confrontare l'eventuale diverso uso dei due verbi. L'archivio di Zenone, per il III a.C., ha fornito la maggior parte dei papiri e il verbo (ἐ)θέλω ricorre spesso in formule, che ne riflettono un uso cristallizzato, in particolare nell'apertura delle lettere, nell'offerta di adoperarsi per procurare quanto il destinatario eventualmente desideri, nell'affidarsi alla volontà misteriosa degli dei. Nel II a.C., oltre ad evidenziarsi fenomeni di evoluzione fonetica della lingua, si assiste all'avvicendarsi del verbo βούλομαι al verbo θέλω, permettendo di dedurre una diversa percezione semantica del verbo θέλω. Si segnala la costruzione di θέλω in P.Par. 49, dove sembra acquistare il valore di "far fare", inedito fino al (160 a.C.). Nel I a.C., oltre alla costruzione con infinitiva avente soggetto diverso da θέλω, il verbo sembra avvertire un ampliamento semantico nell'ottica di necessità, laddove la volontà del soggetto è più veicolata da circostanze prevedibili, che dipendenti dalle sue disposizioni. In epoca tolemaica il verbo θέλω non sembra assumere le funzioni di referente del futuro che assumerà dall'epoca romana, tuttavia le tracce di ampliamento semantico sembrano muoversi in tale direzione.

Taking as a starting point the studyJ. LEE, Auxiliary θέλω, inThe Language of the papyri, edited byT.V. Evans andD. D. Obbink, Oxford 2010, the research aimsatinvestigatingthe uses of (ἐ)θέλω in documentary papyri, dated to the Ptolemaic period (III a.C. - I a.C.), from the morphologic, syntactic and semantic perspective, in order to detect possible prodromes of the evolutionof the verb (ἐ)θέλω as periphrastic future reference. In different typesof texts, e.g. official and private letters, agreements and receipts, I try to investigate the use of (ἐ)θέλω, according to the different cultural levels of the writers, considering also the diachronic perspective. Where βούλομαι and θέλωare both used, I try to investigate their different meanings. The most of papyri dating from III a.C. come from the Zenon Archive, so (ἐ)θέλω is found in several kinds of formulations, as greetings, requesting the recipient what does he/she wishes, asking the gods blessing to the writer's desires. In texts dating from II a.C. we can find phonetic changes, and also the shift from θέλω to βούλομαι in greeting formulations, so we can suppose a different sense of θέλω. We can find a particular use of θέλω in P.Par. 49, where the verb seems to mean "get someone to do something". This meaning seems never found before 160 a.C. In papyri dating from I a.C. the verb θέλω seems indicate also "a need to do something", not depending on the subject's desire, while depending on the (future) events. The meaning of θέλω, during the Ptolemaic Age, doesn't seem referred to future, while we could find this particular kind of meaning since Roman Age.The verb θέλω, on the contrary, seems to extend his semantic field, with a view to future reference.
