Sound is a fundamental component of the environments in which we live. The soundscape of a place can make us feel calm and relaxed, or disrupt our work, celebration or rest. Improving the eco-acoustic quality of these places requires a deep understanding of their soundscapes, and technology offers tools to identify the acoustic features that most affect inhabitants’ quality of life. In this work, we combine acoustemology and machine learning, together with a heuristic approach, to automate soundscape analysis. Five classifiers (Random Forest, RBF SVC, Linear SVC, Logistic Regression and LinearSVC with L1 norm) and a Baseline model based on the A-weighted equivalent sound level (LAeq) classify urban soundscapes as noisy or quiet, with the aim of supporting recommendation systems that guide people towards quieter places. Two feature sets are used: Quantitative features extracted from the audio signal, and Hybrid features, which add qualitative information from user questionnaires. The experiments rely on 68 recordings collected with a smartphone and other 68 with a digital recorder, analyzed over windows of 30, 60 and 90 seconds, and evaluated under three cross-validation schemes reproducing realistic usage scenarios: unseen recordings, unseen users, and both unseen users and recordings. Performance is measured by balanced accuracy over 50 repeated splits and compared through paired significance tests and Friedman-Nemenyi tests. The results show that adding qualitative features significantly improves every machine learning model, and all of them significantly outperform the baseline when Hybrid features are used. The Baseline remains competitive only on smartphone recordings with Quantitative features. No classifier is consistently superior; in the cold-start scenario, i.e, with both new users and new recordings, the five are statistically indistinguishable. Device and window length have little effect on the classifiers, whereas the baseline is sensitive to both.en_UK
