This thesis presents a procedure for building criticality maps of ship encounters from AIS data. The work was carried out within the Interreg JASON project and applied to the Gulf of Tigullio, for 2023, and to the Strait of Messina, for 2022, 2023 and 2024. Encounters between pairs of vessels closer than 500 m are extracted from the AIS messages. On the kinematic subset, eight criticality indicators are computed, based on the observed distance and on kinematic quantities. The spatial and temporal distribution of the indicators is analysed with gridded maps, Moran and Getis-Ord spatial autocorrelation indices, DBSCAN clustering and a density-preserving reallocation test. A heuristic check assesses the compliance of the manoeuvres with COLREG. The choice of indicator has little effect on aggregate criticality maps but a large effect on the selection of the most critical encounters. Aggregate criticality follows traffic density, whereas per-encounter criticality shows a spatial structure that density alone does not reproduce. The two areas show different encounter regimes. In the Gulf of Tigullio criticality is concentrated near Portofino and in the summer season, a profile consistent with predominantly recreational traffic. In the Strait of Messina more than 80% of the encounters involve a stationary vessel, the main zones lie in port areas and criticality is distributed over the whole year; the location of the zones and the main statistics vary little across the three years. The indicators describe the criticality of encounters and do not estimate risk, understood as the combination of frequency and consequences, nor a probability of collision. The identified zones were not compared with accident data.en_UK
