Mantenere i test web è costoso. Il pattern Page Object (POM) riduce i costi centralizzando i localizzatori, ma richiede molto lavoro manuale. I tool attuali sono parziali: i crawler generano test piatti e fragili, mentre i generatori creano astrazioni senza test utilizzabili basandosi su snapshot isolati.
Web test suites are costly to maintain. The Page Object pattern reduces this by centralizing element locators, but demands heavy manual effort. Current automation tools fail to solve this fully: crawlers generate flat, brittle tests, while generators create abstractions without actual tests by relying on isolated page snapshots. This thesis introduces VIRGIL, a pipeline that transforms flat, crawler-generated Selenium tests into Page Object suites via "semantic lifting" without altering test behavior. VIRGIL combines four data sources: crawler behavioral records, DOM data, page fragmentation, and vision-language model interpretations. To ensure accuracy, inference is restricted to actively used elements, employing self-hosted open-weights models. Evaluations on eight open-source apps confirm VIRGIL preserves test behavior. However, a clear limit exists: while automation can perfectly identify, name, and encapsulate elements based on observation, it cannot deduce domain-level logic or meaningful assertions. These require knowing the intent behind an interaction, which goal-free crawlers simply cannot capture.en_UK
