This thesis examines the relationship between the psychiatric asylum, the social construction of deviance and educational processes in Italy, with a focus on women. Starting from the Giolitti Law of 1904, which based committal on presumed social dangerousness rather than on the possibility of treatment, the work follows the conditions of asylums after the Second World War, the Mariotti Law of 1968 and Basaglia's critique, showing that the boundary between normality and deviance was shaped by historically specific cultural and legal choices rather than by objective scientific criteria. Women's history confirms this, since for them the threshold of deviance was set lower: from Lombroso's legacy to models of exemplary femininity, from the control of motherhood to the diagnosis of hysteria, and on to prostitution under Fascism and the trauma of war, rejecting the roles of wife and mother or expressing a suffering that did not conform could be enough to justify diagnosis and committal. The life of Alda Merini gives this reconstruction a concrete face, bearing witness both to the reduction of a person to her diagnosis and to poetry as a means of resistance and of reclaiming her own story. The educational proposal grows out of this value of narrative: film, thanks to the protective distance it offers, is identified as a way of addressing themes such as identity, stigma, trauma and deviance, as the analysis of works such as Billy Elliot, Joker and Good Will Hunting shows. This leads to the psychoeducational project "Seeing Oneself in the Mirror", an emotional film-forum for adolescents living in a psychiatric therapeutic community, organised in ten phases and run with the clinical team.en_UK
