This thesis traces the evolution of the educator's role in Italy and the complex relationship between maternal identity and scientific professionalism within early childhood services. It analyzes the transition from 19th-century models of social motherhood and charity to the paradigm shift introduced by Maria Montessori’s pedagogy, leading up to the current integrated 0–6 education system. The aim is to investigate the extent to which the experience of being both a mother and an educator influences daily work, transforming caregiving into an intentional and conscious act. Empirical research conducted with a sample of thirty educators highlights how motherhood becomes a valuable asset, enabling them to better connect with families, develop greater sensitivity, and manage physical interactions with appropriate boundaries. However, the risk of emotional overload resulting from this dual role is identified as a significant challenge. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that personal history is merely one of many lenses through which to engage in biographical reflection, and that the scientific method is key to a professional approach that recognizes the child as a subject with rights.en_UK
