This work starts from an epistemological question: can play be recognised as the object of study of an autonomous science, free from subordination to other fields of knowledge, and what identity can the discipline generally called Ludology assume? Born from the encounter between long-standing research on play and the pedagogical debate on the epistemological status of Pedagogy, the work does not aim to offer a definitive answer, but to give a rigorous order to the theoretical questions raised by an increasingly varied and expanding ludic world. The inquiry begins by asking what a game is, identifying its ontological coordinates (freedom, autotelism, eudaimonia) and its relationship with formation, education and instruction. It then identifies the human being as the privileged recipient of such a science, owing to the humanising value of play and the relational dynamics it generates. The premises for a scientific foundation of Ludology are then discussed: the terminological choice with respect to Game Science, the hermeneutic, gnoseological and ontological dimensions, the relationships with existing bodies of knowledge, the areas of research and the methodologies available. The final part is devoted to the figure of the ludologist, distinct from that of the Game designer, and to a comparison with Gamification, Game-based learning, gambling and addiction, the aesthetics of play and well-established practices of intervention. The journey ends with a personal definition of play as an autotelic formative experience with a eudaimonic purpose, describable through multiple categories, including the MAD model (Mechanics, Aesthetics, Dynamics).en_UK
