Abstract

This work analyzes the psychological consequences of early deprivation during the Romanian communist period and the results emerging from the research of the Bucharest Early Intervention Project (BEIP). The paper focuses on the impact of neglect caused by growing up in an orphanage on children's cognitive, emotional, and relational development. The evidence emerging from the BEIP highlights the importance of brain plasticity and sensitive periods. The results demonstrate that despite deprivation having a deeply negative impact on the developmental trajectory, a timely placement in responsive foster families is crucial for a person's recovery.
