This study analyzes the philosophical exchange between Descartes and Hobbes, focusing on the Meditations on First Philosophy and the Third Objections. It aims to demonstrate that Hobbes's criticisms don't merely target specific Cartesian arguments but challenge fundamental principles of Descartes's system, thereby revealing two distinct ways of conceiving thought, knowledge and the relationship between the human being and reality. The analysis begins with Descartes's project of seeking a secure foundation upon which to rebuild knowledge. Trough methodical doubt, Descartes arrives at the certainty of the cogito and defines the self as res cogitas, subsequently continuing his pursuit of knowledge. The discussion then focused oh Hobbes's primary criticisms: notion of the idea, natura of the thinking subject and Cartesian dualism. The conclusion offers a personal assessment of the debate, identifying a greater continuity between ontology, epistemology and method within Hobbes's perspective. Particular importance is placed on the link between knowledge and concrete experience, as well as on the simplicity of the theoretical framework and its methodological rigor. This preference is also critically examined, acknowledging that s system's internal coherence doesn't necessarily guarantee its truth and that Hobbesian materialism risks failing to fully account for certain complex aspects of mental life.en_UK
