| it_IT |
| dc.description.abstract | The progressive digitalization of production systems has enabled the development of predictive maintenance methodologies grounded in Machine Learning techniques, allowing for increasingly accurate estimation of asset Remaining Useful Life (RUL). A critical limitation of point estimates, however, lies in their inability to communicate the inherent uncertainty of predictions—a gap of particular significance when such estimates inform operational maintenance decisions. This thesis addresses the role of Uncertainty Quantification in Predictive Maintenance by proposing an integrated framework that combines RUL forecasting, uncertainty quantification and calibration, and decision support mechanisms. The experimental investigation, conducted on the NASA C-MAPSS FD001 dataset, compares Random Forest, XGBoost, and LSTM across predictive accuracy, model stability, and prediction interval quality, employing Conformal Prediction for calibration purposes. Findings indicate that LSTM achieves superior predictive performance, while XGBoost demonstrates enhanced stability and the most favorable balance between interval coverage and width. Integrating uncertainty into decision-making logic improves the detection of critical conditions at the cost of increased false positives. The framework ultimately reveals a fundamental trade-off between prognostic accuracy, information reliability, and maintenance conservatism—a tension that warrants careful consideration in operational deployment. | en_UK |
