Female deviance is examined by looking at how it has been defined and interpreted over time. Early criminological theories interpreted female criminality primarily in terms of biological and psychological characteristics, whilst the social context was given secondary importance. The gender perspective and feminist criminology have subsequently shifted the focus to the roles assigned to women, the expectations associated with femininity, and the power relations that can influence how their behaviour is judged. Motherhood, infanticide and prostitution illustrate this aspect particularly clearly. In these cases, judgement may concern not only the offence committed, but also the extent to which the woman deviates from what is considered acceptable feminine behaviour. The situation of women who have committed offences is then considered from the perspective of social services and the criminal justice system. The UEPE (External Probation Services), alternative measures and reintegration programmes require attention to be paid to the individual’s personal history and the conditions in which they live. Family, work, housing and relationships can, in fact, have a tangible impact on a person’s ability to navigate the criminal justice process and reintegrate into society. For this reason, reintegration should not begin only at the end of the sentence, but should be built through continuity between prison, the local community and support services. Finally, particular attention is paid to feminist social work and to intersectional and anti-oppressive approaches, which emphasise empowerment, self-determination and the individual’s participation. Women who have committed offences do not form a homogeneous group, and case management must therefore take into account responsibility, personal history, resources and social circumstances as a whole, without reducing the individual to the offence committed or to their vulnerability.en_UK
