This thesis examines the musical figure and output of Stanislao Gastaldon (1861–1939), a composer primarily known to the general public for his famous romanza Musica proibita, yet the creator of a far broader and more articulated artistic trajectory within the Italian musical scene at the turn of the twentieth century. Drawing on primary sources, this research aims to contextualize Gastaldon’s operatic production within the debate on musical Verismo and the transformations of fin-de-siècle melodrama. From this perspective, the study focuses specifically on the lyric drama Mala Pasqua! (1890), based on Giovanni Verga's short story Cavalleria rusticana. The analysis investigates the influence of Verismo on both the libretto and the musical choices of the score, placing the work in direct comparison with the other two operatic adaptations of the same name by Pietro Mascagni and Domenico Monleone. Alongside Mala Pasqua!, the thesis examines additional works by the composer, such as the lyric novella Stellina (1896) and Il sonetto di Dante (1906), providing a critical mapping of the reception of his works through the contemporary daily and specialized press (Gazzetta Musicale di Milano, Il Teatro illustrato, L'Indipendente).en_UK
