This study explores the relationship between attachment, reflective functioning, and mental functioning in adolescence, a phase characterized by the reorganization of identity and interpersonal bonds. Adopting a psychodynamic perspective and the PDM-2 model, the study analyzes the internal and relational dynamics involved in development and psychopathology. The research involved 49 adolescents (10–15 years old, M = 12.5). Attachment was assessed using the Child Attachment Interview (CAI), mentalization through the Child Reflective Functioning Scale (CRFS), and mental functioning (MA Axis) with the Psychodiagnostic Chart-Adolescent 2 (PDC-A). There were three main objectives: 1. to verify age and gender differences in the dimensions of mental functioning (M_1, M_2, M_3, M_4, M_8) according to the PDM-2; 2. to examine the relationship between attachment coherence (Child Attachment Interview, CAI) and these dimensions; 3. to investigate the association between reflective functioning (CRFS - General, Other, Self) and mental functioning. No significant differences emerged regarding age and gender. Attachment coherence was positively associated with all considered dimensions, whereas reflective functioning showed more specific links: the Other component predicts M_2 and M_3, the Self component predicts M_4, while M_8 (defensive functioning) is not predicted by reflective functioning but is associated with anger toward parental figures. The data confirm a close interconnection between attachment quality, mentalization, and overall mental functioning in adolescence, highlighting the clinical importance of promoting reflective functioning and the quality of relationships. Although limited by the sample size, the study offers an initial integrated exploration of these constructs, opening avenues for future research with larger samples and longitudinal designsen_UK
