| it_IT |
| dc.description.abstract | The growing relevance of information as both a tool and a space of geopolitical struggle has made European democracies increasingly vulnerable to foreign information influence operations. These operations are attempts by hostile actors to manipulate public opinion and shape the attitudes and behaviors of European audiences, exploiting the vulnerabilities of democratic systems and free debate. This thesis examines the characteristics of Russian information influence operations (IIOs) and how they fit within the broader concept of hybrid threats. To address this research question, the thesis analyzes Russian influence operations in Estonia and Italy, highlighting the actors, tools, and strategies that characterize Russian IIOs and revealing the channels and narratives used to manipulate European societies. Estonia and Italy offer two distinct perspectives because of their different historical and economic ties with Russia, as well as local political and cultural factors, such as Estonia's large Russian-speaking minority. The thesis adopts a qualitative and descriptive approach, analyzing Russian strategic documents, institutional and intelligence reports from Estonia and Italy, and a wide range of academic literature on hybrid threats and disinformation. The study maps the main tactics and narratives Russia uses to pollute these countries' information environments, including disinformation campaigns, psychological operations, networks of proxies and influencers, and manipulation of traditional and digital media. Future research could focus on identifying how Russian IIOs will evolve to exploit and influence new technologies such as Large Language Models (LLMs) and deepfakes. | en_UK |
