This thesis falls within the field of cross-cultural pragmatics and aims to analyse the relationship between irony and linguistic (im)politeness in Italian and Russian. Specifically, this study focuses on the perceptual dimension, with the goal of understanding how the two cultures can influence the perception of these two phenomena among their respective speakers. To conduct the analysis, an anonymous survey was distributed to fifty Italian and fifty Russian native speakers. The survey aimed to gather data on perceptions of two types of irony: situational and verbal irony, with the latter also examined in relation to politeness. The results show how some cultural differences between the two linguistic communities directly influence the perception of situational irony, whereas in the case of verbal irony, they seem to emerge through the two different systems of linguistic politeness.en_UK
