Abstract

Populist radical-right parties represent one of the most significant transformations of the European political landscape in recent years. Their growing presence in electoral competitions and political institutions has brought back to the centre of political debate issues and questions that for a long time had seemed to belong mainly to Europe’s past. This thesis seeks to analyse how this return to the European political landscape has been possible and examines the different paths followed by three cases that illustrate the variety of the phenomenon: VOX in Spain, Fidesz in Hungary, and the Rassemblement National in France. The thesis analyses the causes of their rise and their relationship with the principles of liberal democracy, highlighting similarities and differences among the three cases.
