| it_IT |
| dc.description.abstract | In an increasingly interconnected international system, maritime spaces play a fundamental role in the transport of goods and energy, making the security of maritime routes a crucial aspect of international security. This thesis analyzes how these commercial maritime routes can become instruments of political power. In particular, following a first chapter dedicated to defining maritime security, the most important straits and canals for international trade, and the main threats that may be encountered in the maritime environment, the thesis moves on to the two main case studies: the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea. The analysis will focus primarily on how Iran has decided to exploit its advantageous geographical position to try to coerce the United States to withdraw from the conflict, while for the Red Sea, the analysis will examine how the Houthis have also used their favorable geographical position to seek domestic and international legitimacy. The thesis will then examine the 2026 Strait of Hormuz crisis, which demonstrates how traffic through a strait can be slowed, if not nearly halted, and the Red Sea crisis, which illustrates how a non-state actor can develop the capacity to cause global consequences. The thesis will then conclude with a chapter dedicated to the implications of these crises in Italy, demonstrating how the national and European logistics systems have shown resilience and adaptability. | en_UK |
