Abstract

Inventory management plays a strategic role in production systems by supporting an effective balance between customer service levels and operational costs. The increasing volatility and uncertainty of market demand have made the adoption of efficient planning tools essential for organizations seeking to optimize inventory-related decisions. This thesis examines the fundamental principles of production planning and inventory management, beginning with an overview of production systems and the key performance indicators used to assess their effectiveness. It then investigates the main inventory management models, with particular emphasis on deterministic lot-sizing models and the Wagner-Whitin model, discussing their underlying assumptions, key characteristics, and areas of application. The final chapter focuses on the challenges arising from demand uncertainty, the effects of demand variability on system performance, and the role of safety stock in preventing stockouts. The analysis shows that deterministic models provide effective decision support in environments characterized by relatively stable demand. However, these approaches reveal significant limitations when applied to the dynamic conditions of real-world markets, highlighting the need for more flexible inventory management models to achieve greater operational efficiency.
