| it_IT |
| dc.description.abstract | Accurate measurement of wind speed and direction underpins the design, forecasting and operation of wind farms, yet the instruments used for it are either costly and static, such as meteorological masts, or depend on extensive calibration and empirical lookup tables, as multi-hole pressure probes do. This thesis investigates whether a compact sensing head carrying four low-cost thermal anemometers, intended for an autonomous UAV, can estimate wind speed and direction accurately when calibration is replaced by a machine-learning model trained on measured data.
Two sensorized prototypes were characterised in a wind tunnel. Each carries four hot-wire anemometers on the sides of a compact body; the sensors are individually omnidirectional, so directional information arises only from the coordinated variation of the four outputs as the body shields the flow. The first prototype yielded 4,820 labelled samples over 24 orientations and ten speeds; the second, with a finer 5.625 degree step, yielded 95,440. Noise concentrated in the sectors linked to flow separation and wake, inter-sensor asymmetries proved systematic and correctable, and each sensor responded to speed nonlinearly.
The second prototype modulates more strongly with direction but is noisier. It was still chosen for the machine-learning stage, since the limitation lay in the linear decoder, not the data. A random forest, XGBoost, a polynomial regression and a deep neural network were evaluated by cross-validation and on a speed withheld from training. Because each condition contributes about one hundred near-identical samples, a random split let the tree ensembles memorise conditions and collapse on the unseen speed, while the polynomial and network generalised. A degree-8 polynomial was selected for its simplicity; it estimates wind speed to about 0.17 m/s and direction to roughly 6 to 7 degrees, comparable with established LiDAR and UAV systems but obtained with four simple sensors and a lightweight model. | en_UK |
