Abstract

Questo elaborato cerca di analizzare il mercato globale delle petroliere, concentrandosi sulle principali classi navali (Very Large Crude Carriers, Suezmaxes e Aframaxes) e sulle loro rotte. Un’attenzione particolare è dedicata ai conflitti geopolitici e alle decisioni politiche che hanno influenzato il mercato. Questa analisi sarà effettuata attraverso lo studio di quattro casi, quello iraniano, quello russo, quello venezuelano e quello del Mar Rosso. Inoltre, la tesi esaminerà anche il fenomeno della size-substitution tra le principali navi e l’impatto della flotta ombra sul mercato legale delle petroliere. Verrà anche analizzata la riconfigurazione della logistica di raffinazione e condotta un’analisi quantitativa dei noli per la dimostrazione degli impatti geopolitici. La ricerca si basa su dati provenienti da Banchero Costa grazie al Professor Enrico Paglia, un’intervista con un analista di Frontline, nonché testi accademici di riferimento come Maritime Economics e Tanker Chartering, e documenti ufficiali, report e articoli. La motivazione risiede nell’interesse particolare per il mercato delle petroliere e la geopolitica connessa ad esso. La ricerca dimostra che i commerci illegali attraverso la flotta ombra hanno un impatto significativo sul mercato legale delle petroliere, generando una maggiore volatilità e imprevedibilità del mercato. Di conseguenza, gli armatori sono esposti a un rischio maggiore e sono obbligati ad adottare strategie flessibili per mantenere stabili le loro entrate economiche in un mercato sempre più incerto.

This thesis aims to analyze the global crude oil tanker market, focusing on the key segments, Very Large Crude Carriers, Suezmaxes, and Aframaxes, and their main trading routes. Particular attention is dedicated to the geopolitical conflicts and political decisions that have influenced the market, through the examination of four major cases: Iran, Russia, Venezuela, and the Red Sea. The study also explores the phenomenon of size-substitution among tanker classes and the impact of the “dark fleet” on the mainstream market and its routes, as well as the eastward shift in global refining capacity. Finally, a quantitative analysis of historical freight rates is conducted to measure the direct impact of these crises. The methodology relies on proprietary data from Banchero Costa, guided by Research Manager Enrico Paglia, and an interview with a Frontline analyst. Further sources include the books Maritime Economics and Tanker Chartering, official sanction orders, industry reports, and international news agencies. The motivation for this research stems from a profound interest in the geopolitical aspects that shape the global tanker industry. The research demonstrates that sanctioned and illegal trades through the dark fleet take a significant toll on the mainstream tanker market, generating greater volatility and unpredictability. As a result, compliant shipowners are exposed to higher risk and must adopt flexible strategies to maintain stable revenues in an increasingly uncertain environment.
