L'immigrazione nel discorso politico di Donald Trump: riflessioni e cambiamenti tra il primo e il secondo mandato

Abstract

La tesi presenta un'analisi linguistica di quattro discorsi sull'immigrazione pronunciati da Donald Trump, due durante il primo mandato e due durante il secondo, con l'obiettivo di trarne riflessioni e osservarne i cambiamenti nel tempo. Il primo capitolo delinea la figura di Donald Trump, ripercorrendo la sua carriera da uomo d'affari fino alla sua ascesa in politica. Vengono poi presentate statistiche sull'immigrazione irregolare dal 1990 al 2020, al fine di offrire una panoramica generale del fenomeno e mettere in luce l'origine dei migranti privi di documenti. Il capitolo si chiude introducendo il tema dell'immigrazione nel discorso politico, con particolare attenzione al linguaggio tipicamente utilizzato da Trump e all'evoluzione della sua retorica tra il primo e il secondo mandato. Il secondo capitolo è dedicato all'analisi linguistica dei discorsi. Per il primo mandato sono stati presi in esame l'Oval Office Address on Immigration and Border Security dell'8 gennaio 2019 e Remarks by President Trump on Modernizing Our Immigration System for a Stronger America del 16 maggio 2019; per il secondo mandato, The Inaugural Address del 20 gennaio 2025 e Donald Trump's Remarks to the United Nations del 23 settembre 2025. L'analisi ha preso in considerazione diverse strategie retoriche: ethos, logos e pathos; l'uso di eufemismi e disfemismi; la presenza di binomials, bicolons, tricolons e policons; le figure retoriche; la frequenza dei pronomi personali e degli aggettivi possessivi; e infine il linguaggio valutativo impiegato nei confronti degli immigrati. Il terzo capitolo riprende e approfondisce alcune riflessioni emerse durante l'analisi, tra cui l'esistenza di strutture linguistiche ricorrenti e la narrativa del "noi contro loro", evidenziando inoltre i cambiamenti riscontrati nel linguaggio di Trump tra il primo e il secondo mandato e fornendo le conclusioni.

This thesis presents a linguistic analysis of four speeches on immigration delivered by Donald Trump, two during his first term and two during his second, with the aim of drawing reflections and observing changes over time. The first chapter outlines Donald Trump's public profile, tracing his career from businessman to political figure. Statistics on irregular immigration from 1990 to 2020 are then presented to provide a general overview of the phenomenon and highlight the origins of undocumented migrants. The chapter concludes by introducing the topic of immigration in political discourse, with particular focus on the language typically employed by Trump and the evolution of his rhetoric between his first and second terms. The second chapter is devoted to the linguistic analysis of the speeches. For the first term, the Oval Office Address on Immigration and Border Security of January 8, 2019, and Remarks by President Trump on Modernizing Our Immigration System for a Stronger America of May 16, 2019, were examined; for the second term, The Inaugural Address of January 20, 2025, and Donald Trump's Remarks to the United Nations of September 23, 2025.The analysis took into account various rhetorical strategies: ethos, logos, and pathos; the use of euphemisms and dysphemisms; the presence of binomials, bicolons, tricolons, and policons; rhetorical figures; the frequency of personal pronouns and possessive adjectives; and the evaluative language used with reference to immigrants. The third chapter revisits and explores some of the reflections that emerged during the analysis, including the existence of recurring linguistic patterns and the “us versus them” narrative, highlighting the changes in Trump's language between his first and second terms and providing conclusions.
