Fergus o il cavaliere dal bello scudo: romanzo cavalleresco parodico del XIII secolo

Abstract

La tesi propone uno studio complessivo del Roman de Fergus, romanzo arturiano in antico francese composto agli inizi del XIII secolo e attribuito a Guillaume le Clerc, integrando analisi filologica, codicologica e interpretativa con la prima traduzione italiana integrale dell’opera. Il lavoro si articola in tre parti: la prima ricostruisce genesi e diffusione medievale del romanzo, analizzandone la tradizione manoscritta e la collocazione in raccolte narrative complesse, in cui testi di diverso registro convivono e orientano la ricezione. La seconda offre la traduzione italiana in versi liberi, corredata da note esplicative e da un commento volto a chiarire confronti intertestuali, contesto storico-culturale, procedimenti stilistici e principali questioni testuali. La terza sviluppa l’interpretazione complessiva, indagando il rapporto strutturale con le opere di Chrétien de Troyes, la nozione di “oscillazione controllata” tra parodia e pastiche, la dimensione satirica e la costruzione del narratore e del lettore implicito. L’analisi mostra come il Fergus non sia né semplice divertissement epigonale né gesto puramente demolitorio. Il romanzo lavora dall’interno la tradizione arturiana: ne assume i codici come grammatica condivisa e, proprio perché li padroneggia, li incrina con scarti mirati. La parodia emerge così non come attacco esterno, ma come modalità strutturale di lettura che presuppone la collaborazione di un lettore capace di riconoscere il gioco intertestuale. In tale prospettiva, l’opera intreccia consapevolezza metaletteraria e sottile tensione satirica, che investe tanto i meccanismi della cavalleria letteraria quanto le dinamiche culturali del contesto scozzese in cui il romanzo prende forma, costruendo la propria originalità non contro Chrétien, ma a partire da Chrétien.

This thesis offers a comprehensive study of the Roman de Fergus, an Old French Arthurian romance composed in the early thirteenth century and attributed to Guillaume le Clerc, combining philological, codicological, and interpretative analysis with the first complete Italian translation of the work. The study is structured in three parts: the first reconstructs the romance’s origins and medieval circulation, examining its manuscript tradition and its placement within complex narrative compilations in which texts of different registers coexist and shape patterns of reception. The second provides an Italian translation in free verse, accompanied by explanatory notes and a commentary designed to clarify intertextual parallels, historical and cultural context, stylistic procedures, and major textual issues. The third develops an overall interpretation of the work, focusing on its structural relationship with the romances of Chrétien de Troyes, the notion of a controlled modulation of tone between parody and pastiche, its satirical dimension, and the construction of the narrator and implied reader. The analysis demonstrates that Fergus is neither a mere epigonal divertissement nor a purely subversive gesture toward the Arthurian world. Rather, the romance works from within the Arthurian tradition: it adopts its codes as a shared narrative grammar and, precisely because it masters them, subtly destabilizes them through calculated deviations. Parody thus emerges not as an external attack, but as a structural mode of reading that presupposes the active collaboration of a reader capable of recognizing the intertextual game. In this perspective, the work intertwines metaliterary awareness with a nuanced satirical tension that engages both the mechanisms of chivalric literature and the cultural dynamics of the Anglo-Norman milieu in medieval Scotland, constructing its originality not against Chrétien, but from within his legacy.
