Dal sogno olimpico alla realtà turistica: due facce di una medaglia chiamata Milano Cortina 2026

Abstract

Questa tesi ha lo scopo di analizzare il fenomeno dei Giochi Olimpici, i meccanismi che si celano dietro alla loro organizzazione, e gli effetti che producono nelle città ospitanti, focalizzando l'analisi su Milano Cortina 2026. Nel dettaglio, l'elaborato presenta inizialmente l'importanza dei Giochi Olimpici nella società moderna rintracciando la loro storia e esponendo la filosofia dell'olimpismo, che racchiude i valori fondanti dei Giochi. Ciononostante, vengono riconosciute le discriminazioni di genere, razza e orientamento sessuale che hanno 'macchiato' l'evento. In seguito, si offre una panoramica delle strategie adottate nella promozione delle culture e delle tradizioni locali attraverso le Cerimonie di Apertura e le Mascotte Olimpiche, oltre che dei principali impatti derivanti dall'organizzazione dei Giochi Olimpici, considerando l'aspetto economico, ambientale, sociale e urbano. Quanto analizzato viene successivamente declinato nel contesto di Milano Cortina 2026. Infine, si sono comparati i risultati ottenuti con le opinioni dei residenti di Genova e Milano, raccolte tramite un questionario online. La ricerca evidenzia una tendenza a dare maggior peso agli impatti negativi piuttosto che ai benefici derivanti dall'evento e dalla sua eredità; suggerendo, quindi, che, nonostante le intenzioni e gli auspici del comitato organizzatore, i Giochi Olimpici mancano ancora di una strategia organizzativa efficace.

This thesis aims to investigate the Olympic Games as a phenomenon, the underlying mechanisms of their organization, and the outcomes they catalyze on host cities. In this particular case, after an overview, the focus will be on Milano Cortina 2026. In detail, the structure of this dissertation is as follows: first and foremost, it presents the importance of the Olympic Games in modern society by retelling their history and presenting the philosophy of Olympism, which condenses the founding values of the Games. Nevertheless, it acknowledges the ‘stains’ of discrimination on the basis of gender, race, and sexual orientation. Afterwards, this thesis provides an in-depth account of the strategies adopted in promoting local cultures and traditions by analyzing the Opening Ceremonies and the Olympic Mascots, starting from Sydney 2000. Furthermore, it outlines the main effects that are entailed with the organization of the Olympic Games, considering economic, environmental, social and urban perspectives, before delving into the specifics of the Olympic Winter Games of Milano Cortina 2026. In the end, what emerged from academic literature has been compared with the people’s perspective on Milano Cortina 2026 through an online survey distributed among the residents of Genoa and Milan. The research highlights that people tend to weigh the negative outcomes more than the benefits stemming from the projects and initiatives of legacy; suggesting that, despite the declared intentions and commitments of the Organizing Committee, an effective strategy is yet to be adopted when it comes to hosting the Olympic Games.
