Un'enclave nella metropoli (Il caso del circuito di Formula 1 di Shanghai)

Abstract

La presente tesi analizza in modo critico il ruolo del circuito di Shanghai nel contesto urbano, evidenziandone peculiarità, criticità e potenzialità legate alla sua condizione di enclave monofunzionale periferica, situata a circa 30 km dal centro cittadino. L’obiettivo è comprendere le ragioni della sua collocazione attraverso l’evoluzione urbana asiatica, caratterizzata da modelli meno densi ed espansivi rispetto a quelli europei, e riflettere sull’impatto delle scelte morfologiche e culturali nell’integrazione delle grandi infrastrutture sportive. Shanghai, metropoli globale in continua espansione e dotata di un sistema infrastrutturale maturo, rappresenta un caso studio significativo e potenzialmente replicabile in altri contesti internazionali. La ricerca si sviluppa attraverso un confronto tra il circuito di Shanghai e una selezione di circuiti internazionali, individuando strategie urbanistiche e progettuali che favoriscono o ostacolano l’integrazione con la città. A partire dall’analisi comparativa, la tesi propone una strategia progettuale volta a superare la monofunzionalità dell’infrastruttura, trasformandola in un polo dinamico e connesso. Centrale è il potenziamento delle connessioni tramite una nuova linea metropolitana e la riorganizzazione di un asse urbano principale, affiancati da una rete ciclabile e da nodi strategici di accessibilità. Infine, viene proposta una rifunzionalizzazione del circuito durante tutto l’anno, attraverso l’introduzione di spazi verdi, aree pubbliche ed eventi culturali, con l’obiettivo di rendere l’autodromo un luogo attivo e integrato nei ritmi della città.

This thesis critically examines the role of the Shanghai Circuit within its urban context, highlighting its characteristics, limitations, and potential related to its condition as a peripheral, monofunctional enclave located approximately 30 km from the city center. The main objective is to understand the reasons behind its peripheral location through the lens of Asian urban development, characterized by less dense and more expansive models compared to European ones, and to reflect on how morphological and cultural choices affect the integration of large sports infrastructures into the urban fabric. Shanghai, as a global metropolis in continuous expansion and supported by a mature infrastructural system, represents a significant case study with the potential to be replicated in other international contexts. The research develops through a comparative analysis between the Shanghai Circuit and a selection of international circuits, identifying urban planning and design strategies that either promote or hinder integration with the city. Building on this comparative analysis, the thesis proposes a design strategy aimed at overcoming the infrastructure’s current monofunctional character and transforming it into a dynamic and well-connected hub. Central to this proposal is the enhancement of connectivity through a new metro line and the reorganization of a primary urban axis, complemented by a cycling network and strategically located access nodes. Finally, the thesis suggests a year-round reactivation of the circuit through the introduction of green spaces, public areas, and cultural events, with the goal of transforming the racetrack into an active and integrated place aligned with the rhythms of the city.
