Estetismo e Femminismo: Vernon Lee, Miss Brown

Abstract

Questa tesi analizza alcune tematiche di Miss Brown di Vernon Lee. Pubblicato nel 1884, il romanzo critica e mette in ridicolo le incoerenze e le falsità del movimento estetico, di cui l’autrice faceva parte. Focalizzandosi sul punto di vista di Anne Brown, una giovane donna ambiziosa, di migliorare attraverso lo studio la propria condizione sociale che si confronta con i rappresentanti dell’estetismo londinese, il romanzo tratta tematiche legate al movimento estetico, il suo atteggiamento contemplativo e distaccato nei confronti della vita, la posizione della donna all’interno del movimento stesso e più in generale nella società dell’epoca, il ruolo dell’istruzione, il femminismo, le problematiche dell’orientamento sessuale e della sessualità stessa. Quest’ultimo tema si collega alla biografia di Vernon Lee, nota anche per la sua ambiguità sessuale. Come scrittrice assume uno pseudonimo maschile, indossa abiti da uomo e fa della libertà il suo stile di vita. È proprio l’esplorazione degli argomenti legati al genere e alla sessualità a rendere quest’opera molto attuale, tanto da poter considerare Vernon Lee una vera pioniera. Da Miss Brown emerge, infatti, una critica rivelatoria dell’ipocrisia e del distacco dalla realtà morale e sociale riferita al momento storico in cui il romanzo fu pubblicato, ma che, a livello più generale, si può considerare come una critica di tutti gli aspetti portati all’eccesso di ogni società e movimento che inevitabilmente generano manipolazione, negazione della libertà dei più deboli, e disuguaglianze che, nel caso del romanzo colpiscono la figura della donna. Il lavoro è suddiviso in capitoli. Si parte dalla biografia dell’autrice, si passa all’analisi del romanzo e del complicato rapporto con il movimento estetico, per poi trattare i temi del femminismo, il ruolo dell’istruzione e infine terminare con la tematica del genere e della sessualità.

This thesis sets out to provide a thematic analysis of Miss Brown by Vernon Lee. This novel was published in 1884; it criticizes and ridicules the inconsistencies and falsehoods of the Aesthetic movement of which the author was part. Focusing on the point of view of Anne Brown, a young woman ambitious to improve her social condition through study who confronts the representatives of London aestheticism, the novel deals with themes connected to the Aesthetic movement, its contemplative and detached attitude towards life, the position of women within the movement itself and more generally in the society of the time, the role of education, feminism, issues of sexual orientation and sexuality itself - a theme that is connected to the biography of Vernon Lee, who was also known for her sexual ambiguity. As a writer she takes on a male pseudonym, she wears men’s clothes and makes freedom her lifestyle. It is the exploration of topics related to gender and sexuality that makes her novel so contemporary. In fact, Miss Brown provides a revealing criticism of hypocrisy and detachment from moral and social reality referring to the historical moment in which the novel was published. On a more general level, this criticism can be considered as a criticism of all the aspects of every society that are taken to excess, thus inevitably generating manipulation, denial of the freedom of the weakest and inequalities which, in the case of the novel, affect the figure of women. This dissertation is divided into five chapters. The first chapter traces the author’s biography, the second moves on to the analysis of the novel, the third chapter examines the complex relationship with the Aesthetic movement, the fourth deals with the themes of feminism and the role of education, while the fifth zooms in on gender and sexuality.
